Also: "Block this member's threads" has to be checked and saved TWICE for it to stick.
There is something odd about that attribute. If you refresh the page quite a lot of javascript loads before it appears.

Ok, here's a clue. The troublesome attribute is "Block this member's threads." If that is the ONLY box checked, the member is not saved on the block list. If you check something else in addition, it is. I've been trying to mark that option only just to conceal the threads of certain prolific members. That makes perfect sense. Thread blocking is done via a plugin that assumes you are already blocking somebody and uses that list to know what threads to block. I'd assume if you remove all the other blocks provided by Proboards, the plugin cannot find them as a blocked member because you've essentially already removed them from your ignore list. I just tested it and if you choose only to block their threads, they are removed from the block list. The best option for now is to also choose Block PMs or something similar to keep them on your block list so you can block their threads. I wish PB would just add a block threads option to the defaults and rid the need for a plugin. I've always found it a bit silly to not include that right out of the gate.

Sorry.

I suppose it's possible that the block threads plugin ties into the default block options, or that without one of the other options checked, the forum itself assumes you don't want to block that member and removes it from the list. Seems to me the solution is to simply check one of the other options in addition to the thread block. Just curious, though... why would you want to block someone's threads, but still allow everything else? Why: there are people who flood the forums with threads. They cover the whole page. Nonsense polls and such. I don't mind seeing their other contributions but want to ignore what they initiate. Checking one of the other boxes like PM: yes, that will work. I think it ought to work without that, but it is a small thing. Took experimentation to discover it.

You'd have to talk to the Proboards staff to get that changed but I'd like to think they're already planning to implement it.

All my "Block this member's threads" got reset to unchecked recently.
Also: I wish it were possible to make blocked posters completely invisible, but they continue to show up on the thread list when they bump their own posts somehow, which some do compulsively. I have to unsubscribe from the thread to keep them from showing up on my Participated list.

I have to unsubscribe from the thread to keep them from showing up on my Participated list. Apologies for the inconvenience. I ended up replacing the thread block plugin with one I wrote because the original was causing too many problems. It wasn't feasible to transfer your old settings over to it so everything was simply reset. As far as the Participated list goes, I assume you mean when somebody you've blocked responds to a thread you've posted to, it gets pushed to the top and stays on the list. There's no good way to go about that, unfortunately.

The irritation is when I care about the thread, see new activity but find nothing there, just because a banned character has bumped his last posting. (How do they do that?) I would be a poor forum moderator because I would cast a lot of bozos into outer darkness. Thanks again.

Has the block member function been discontinued altogether? I'd placed racist troll jamesavalon on block as he seemed to be following me around the board, but I just saw on the Books board that he's now able to read my posts again and to respond. When I tried to put him back on block there was no choice in the drop-down to do so.
The weirdest part is, when I go to the member pages and pull up his name, I get no action on his to block member. I'm given only the options of 'send message' or 'send gift'. On other member profiles I have the option to 'block member', but not on his. That sounds utterly insane, but it's what I'm getting. Does that make any sense at all, and can it be fixed?

When I tried to put him back on block there was no choice in the drop-down to do so. I'd prefer not to deal with him any longer--he's a pest, to put it mildly--but the new format doesn't look as if it allows for this option now. Blocking does not prevent anyone from seeing your posts. The options are: - Hide this member's posts.
You will not see the contents of the member's posts. - Do not let this member start new conversations with me.
This applies only to PMs and will not prevent the member from replying to an old PM chain until you delete that chain. It has no effect on regular forum posts, so the member can both read and respond to whatever you post. - Do not let this member follow me or my activities.
This keeps the member from using the 'follow' function. It does not prevent the member from looking for your posts. - Block notifications from this member.
If the member quotes one of your posts or likes a post, you will not be notified. - Block this member's threads.
No threads started by this member will be visible to you except for a brief moment while the forum loads. Threads started by the member and replied to by other members will be visible in Recent Posts. - Old threads bumped by this user will start at the bottom.
Minimally useful at best.

Poor choice of wording on my part, as I'd forgotten the exact terms. I'd had jamesavalon set to all but the 'hide member's posts' setting. Now I'm unable to locate those choices; I was aware he could still read my posts, I just didn't care to interact with him any longer as he's a bit of a weirdo and had become slightly stalker-ish. I'll likely also select 'hide' for his posts next time, if I can get back to the settings to allow me to do so.

amyghost, click on the privacy tab in your profile. Find the member, make sure the boxes you want are checked, and scroll to the bottom of the page and save.

Just shows how little I'd felt any need to use these settings, I couldn't retrace the steps to find them again. Thanks, Catman!

amyghostYeah, I tend to fairly rarely use the block another member feature to as currently I only have six users blocked and some of those were more due to spamming up the forums where as I would say maybe a handful I blocked due to them always talking crap as some people just can't act civil in the slightest and after a certain point ill just block a person. I am not quick to block another member as I don't mind if someone disagrees with me, as that's not block worthy, but if they are always going to talk crap about me, like personal attacks etc, over-and-over for next to no legitimate reason, eventually I will block them (especially when it comes to non-political/religious reasons as I tend to give people more leeway on those topics since things will naturally become a little more heated when two people feel pretty strongly about a issue and they are pretty much opposites). because I realize that sometimes things can get heated, but you can't just go off on people calling them names and other BS things all of the time. but say in something like politics or religious matters, I figure in general people are more likely to lose their cool as I tend to allow more leeway before blocking someone here as I can understand someone getting a little upset and talking a little crap about another person on a issue they feel pretty strongly about (at least once in a while), but in terms of general movies and the like topics I tend to think there is not much legitimate reason to always attack another person with personal attacks etc as one can disagree but at least show a little respect towards the person your disagreeing with (a little crap talking once in a while I would overlook but if it's pretty much non-stop from a user, eventually ill block that person). p.s. but about the 'block' feature... yeah, it is fairly well hidden so it's not surprising many won't be able to find it. come to think of it, they should make finding this feature a little easier. like a basic block of someone is not difficult but to get to the details of what's blocked that's not nearly as easy to find.

I agree. I think having that feature more easily available could help to nip some issues before they snowball into larger ones.
