This rarely shown movie is the first American film directed by Jean Renoir. It stars Dana Andrews, Walter Brennan, Anne Baxter, and Walter Houston.
It's been many years since I saw this movie so I can't remember details, but I'll never forget the final shot--a closeup of Fleeter (the dog who set the action in motion), being petted by Walter Brennan.

I actually have this movie on DVD. There was a few second unit shots from Okefenokee Swamp Park in Georgia. It's one of those movies I can't make up my mind about what to think about it, but it's very interesting. There's old wellknown actors (the two Walters, Brennan and Houston) and a few who's stardom was a few years later (Dana Andrews, Anne Baxter, Ward Bond). Couldn't find a pic of the scene you mentioned, snsuroneHere is another of Brennan and the dog:

Remade a decade later as LURE OF THE WILDERNESS with Jean Peters and Jeffrey Hunter in the Baxter and Andrews roles.
Walter Brennan was also in it as well -- though I believe this time taking the Huston part.

Beautiful filming. There's things to enjoy in all of Jean Renoir's pictures from his time working in America. He said he liked to slip off to the pictures to watch b-movies, especially westerns.

What other American movies did Renoir direct? I mostly remember his French films, like GRAND ILLUSION and LA BELLE ET LE BETE (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST).

. Repeatedly and deliberately posting film endings is considered really crappy behavior even though no one else will say so to you directly, snsurone. Btw The dog in the film was named TROUBLE and he was portrayed by a dog named Fleeter

Somewhere in my DVD collection, I have a copy of SWAMP WATER (1941) and KENTUCKY (1938) in the same box.
My problem is that my collection is not shelved in any organized manner, so I would have to look through the back ribs on all the DVD boxes on my shelves.

kijiiAlways remember, The alphabet is your friend
I have a master list of "what I have" and notation as to whether they are on VHS or DVD. Where there are two in the same box, I make note on the list and file by the first alpha title. Shelved alphabetically EXCEPT for a few select actors whose films are kept together on a shelf. ...also the special shelves for horror, musicals and Shakespeare.
BUT the all mixed up method is a great way to keep reminding yourself of what you have !

Though not directed in the USA, The River (1951) is another English-language movie that generally gets good reviews. www.imdb.com/title/tt0043972/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_8

But, think of it this way: If you shelf your movies in alphabetical order, what do you do when you want to add another (new) box to your shelf? Do you: a) Keep shoving all of your movies down the shelf. b) Or what? I DO have a system for all my Classical Music CD Collection. I keep an alphabetical list (by composer) of each CD (or group of CDs--from 1 or 2 CDs in box). But, I have to give each standardized jewel box an index number which I can use to keep by alphabetical list up to date. This allows for re-shuffling, adding or changing CDs. With over 600 CDs, some of them have had several index numbers over their lifetime. Then, EVERYTHING CHANGED when I discovered that I could rip my CDs into MP3s and rearrange the music on a homemade burned CD or DVD. But, I still have those index numbers for the boxes on my shelves. I am still trying to figure out how "the cloud" will change the organization of our various collections.

Mostly b)
Really ... I do a ! Funny thing about "A" is that I do rather enjoy doing that. One whole hallway is shelved with movies and I tend to acquire films in batches and move things from shelf to shelf as needed (when I get around to it or get annoyed enough because things are "lost" on the "unshelved" shelf.)
What I do when I get new movies is write them in the "master" list book on a page opposite the printed pages so that that are in the vicinity of being where they belong. Then when it gets too messy, periodically do an update to the computerized list. DVD's and VHS's are easier to label than those little jewel cases so re-labeling and numbering has never been an issue for me. Have never considered clouding.

So, you STILL have a VHS player? Wow...watch out!! That non-digital stuff may soon be a thing of the past. However, if you still have a VHS player, it may be a collector's item within our lifetimes.
There are some movies that NEVER made it to the digital format. For example: Dark at the Top of the Stairs, Swamp Water, Kentucky , etc.
For many years a had a combo (DVD and VHS) player. I really enjoyed it because I was able to record something on TV and then dub it onto a homemade DVD. OR Dub from a VHS to a DVD in order to save it before it faded. So, many of my DVDs are of this homemade variety.
There are so many movies that are lost because no one bothered to save or restore them. I would love to see some of those things...for example, how can one find The Pied Piper (1942)? Maybe check out E-Bay to see if it has ever been recorded by someone........

kijii Sit down as I may have some news that will cause fainting. I also still have a working Sony Betamax machine. Well... it works if I have the cover off and nudge the wheel a little bit. I have many tapes still. They have mostly been replaced with VHSs and then with DVDs or abandoned. A few of the films I had only on beta so they got looked at before the emergency playing treatment was needed. Need to find me a buyer !
Have a tv that is also a DVD player and a couple of VHS/DVD combos that play but don't record. Seem to be set for a while. VHS players are always available at the thrift stores and some have a return policy so if they don't work you can bring them back. I should probably stock up on a couple.
That '42 Pied Piper looks like it might be very good. EDIT: It's on You Tube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=huRmQFt7JT4
