Not only is this the best Star Trek movie, it is one of the best Sci-fi movies of all time. Certainly top 20.

Okay, I'll put it another way:
The best Star Trek movie on the big screen since 1991, which in no way disputes other fans' assertion and belief that No. 2 is the best.

OH MAN. After watching Star Trek: The Movie in the theater (twice) The Wrath of Khan was like Gone With the Wind.
But there is no question that I like First Contact the best.
Resistance is Futile.

Okay, in case no one is getting it, I actually saw Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in a movie theater this week (for the first time in 35 years or since 1982, or the second time in 35 years, however that should be phrased). The dialogue and sound were tinny, but the visual effects, especially the space battles, were amazing on the big screen. TV doesn't do this movie justice. It was great to see the real movie Enterprise (whether the original or A) back on the big screen again, in all her cinematic majesty. And James Horner's epic, iconic score blasting through the speakers was absolutely, effing GLORIOUS. I normally wouldn't admit this, but I could not contain myself during the opening credits. And the end credits were just as awesome. The overwhelming music made it very clear to me that Michael Giaachino, who is an otherwise fine composer, is (and I'll put it mildly and kindly here) the least effective Star Trek composer. Overall, the experience made it very clear to me that the new Star Trek movies starting with 2009, while entertaining in their own right, just don't cut it. They don't have the heart and soul of the Original Series cast movies, or even the Next Generation cast movies (strictly in terms of the TNG cast). And I'm saying that it's the best Star Trek movie on the big screen in 26 years, or since 1991, which doesn't dispute those who consider 2 to be the best. With the exception of the TNG fanboy here, of course.

Didn't know this was rereleased recently. It's one of my favorite movies, but I do have it on blu ray. What to do, what to do...

No, I'm just saying my statement does not contradict those who think Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is the absolute best Star Trek movie. I absolutely think it is one of the two best Star Trek movies of all time, the other being Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which is my personal favorite and thus the best for me. I like II, III, IV, and VI, which are all very fine Star Trek movies. But even for all of I's and V's faults, the first 6 and 1/3 or 1/4 movies are for me head and shoulders above all other Trek, simply for the presence of the unparalleled and charismatic original series cast.
