Now that all the smoke & mirrors and director/writer shell games are over, the real question is why did Rian Johnson bail?
We all should've known that bringing back Abrams is what Disney and Kennedy wanted to do all along. But what happened with Johnson?
Remember when Rian Johnson was practically going to write and direct the rest of the trilogy by himself? There were even rumors that what JJ Abrams wrote in TFA was framed around what Rian Johnson was doing in TLJ.
1. Then Trevorrow took over directing duties for episode 9. That still left Rian Johnson as writer/director of TLJ and writer of episode 9.
2. Then it was leaked that Abrams never wrote TFA to accommodate any story ideas Johnson had for TLJ. He was starting cold with how to tie his story to what Abrams established in TFA.
3. Then Trevorrow took over writing duties for episode 9. Then Trevorrow brought in Connolly to co-write.
4. Trevorrow and Connolly are replaced as writers by Jack Thorne. Trevorrow is still directing.
5. The entire writing and directing staff on episode 9 is fired. They're replaced by Jar Jar Abrams. The rumor is that the writing duties were offered to Rian Johnson again. But he flatly rejected the offer.
So why did Rian Johnson shrink back to only doing TLJ? Does he know something we don't? (And there's always the possibility that none of these moves were his choice but they were made for him by Kathleen Kennedy. And all of this being Rian's choice is Disney's cover story to take the heat off Kennedy and Abrams).
Thoughts?

Maybe he was given a free hand for TLJ because it was the middle part of the trilogy(usually the darker one). Maybe they couldn't guarantee him the creative freedom for the finale, who knows? Gotta be honest tho, at this moment i don't care about what happens to Rey, Kylo or Finn( especially Finn, he makes me miss Jar Jar Binks)

It's just...tiring and sad to think about. All this is, is Disney trying to maximize profits. The story arc and universe are afterthoughts, so they'll hire the guy that will pander to the target audience. For some reason, people didn't care that the magic was gone, they just wanted to see the same arc, with the same imagery they remember from the past.
Maybe what Rian made in VIII differs from that model too much, but they can't do jack about it at this point, so he's out for IX. Whatever. He still had to deal with the rotting pile of shit we were all given in Dec 2015. Maybe he can mold it into a nice looking vase but it's still just shit.

Why not just ask him? He's on Twitter.

Why not just ask him? He's on Twitter. Ha, what if he answers Hidalgo style: "There was no Rian Johnson in Episode IX. Like, if Rian Johnson and Episode IX were riding together on an airplane, they would need two separate tickets."

It's troubling to think that there is no actual vision for a cohesive trilogy here.

It's troubling to think that there is no actual vision for a cohesive trilogy here. I would think it would mean the opposite. Couldn't it be that the executive creative team is firing directors precisely because those directors aren't toeing the line when it comes to the basic story arc?

More likely they weren't being allowed to have a cohesive and creative vision beyond copy-and-pasting the screenplays of the OT. The chances are very high that TLJ will borrow plenty from TESB. And good as guaranteed that episode 9 will copy-and-paste 90% of ROTJ. No other explanation really makes sense. And no other outcome really makes sense, given Abrams reputation and Kennedy's previous actions and comments. The only thing that really needs to be worked out is how to move Rey through the stories of TESB and ROTJ maintaining the warrior princess theme and that type of connection to the Force. And how to handle Carrie Fisher's character with her passing.

Throw him off to the hell where people are skinned alive! But as for your content, I can only hope that TLJ borrows themes from TESB. That's the fucking point.

I feel like Rian Johnson is one of those guys that only wants to do one movie. He seems to be the kind of guy to want to make something, then stand back and admire his work, not try to build on it.
There's nothing wrong with that. I just don't see a scenario where Johnson is on his hands and knees, pleading before Kennedy for the Episode IX director's chair.

He doesn't want to be tied up with a franchise and deal with Kennedy. Do one and be done.

General plot adopted from Lucas treatments. Ardnt to write script. Ardnt leaves. JJ Brought in to write with Kasdan. JJ to direct TFA. Rian Johnson to write & direct TLJ. JJ to "help" with transition. Colin Trevorow 2 write & direct 9. Johnson AND JJ "help" with the transition. My sources were Jedi Council Forums in late 2015. Now we get stories of how nobody knew what the frick was going on with the plot after TFA. RJ begging JJ to put R2D2 with Chewbacca instead of BB8 at the end of TFA and how CT had 2 tie up any other lose ends from RJ that RJ couldn't get 2 from JJ.

They likely sign non disclosure agreements. Maybe Disney wanted to have the best of both worlds (from their perspective) they have his name attached the film and also Abrams. That way they can market it from both sides, like how they got Kasdan back even though he probably did next to nothing.
The original plots that Gary Kurtz described sounded more interesting
Went something like
Episode 6: Luke confront Vader--fight between Vader and Emperor for Luke (the Emperor is either a hologram or a clone), Vader dies--Leia becomes leader, Han Solo dies.
Episode 7: Luke travels the galaxy fighting remnants of the Empire, rebuilds Jedi order. Episode 8: Luke finds the Other Episode 9: Luke has final confrontation with the Emperor. Ackbar declares "it's a wrap!"

Luke should not be the main protagonist in the ST and so I'm glad he's not. Palpatine sure as shit shouldn't be the antagonist in the ST. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Palpatine and I thought McDiarmid's performance in the PT was the finest acting performance in the franchise, but talk about recycled/rehashed! Who wants to see the same antagonist for all nine movies? No thanks, bring on Plagueis or whoever else Snoke really is.
