Just saw 'Mother!' I want to start by stating two things. 1. The marketing is a straight up lie. This is neither a horror movie or thriller in ANY sense of the word. What in gods name were they thinking? Many people are going back for a refund on this one. 2. It is both the worst and possibly the best movie I've seen in a while. Sound extreme? That's because this experience was extreme. I've never seen such an abstract movie in a theater with this kind of marketing and a huge cast. It's basically one big art project of ideas. But.... I can not stop thinking about it...... My review and then I'll spoiler tag what I think the movie is trying to say. The movie is one big metaphor. The problem with this movie is that it really hits you over the head with this fact over and over again until you want to walk out. It's almost like the director doesn't believe that you get his ideas so he repeats them constantly to the point of sheer exhaustion and punishment. And then there is nothing else to the film besides the metaphor! The movie is just Lawrence going from room to room finding and doing weird sh*t. There isn't really an engaging story or really any story at all. And by the time I got super interested it was 1 hour and 40 minutes too late and I was extremely frustrated and bored. There are no standout performances or moments besides the end that make you say "wow". The film felt 3 hours long. The movie would have been far better served up with a more cohesive plot surrounding the weirdness and metaphor like 'Black Swan' or maybe even a short film. What I think the metaphor is. Bardem is God. Lawrence is someone he's created to be Mother Earth and take care of things basically. The house is basically a garden of eden type area(especially the upstairs room with the glowing rock). It's her canvas of beauty. And then when the curiosity and sin starts flowing everything bad comes pouring into Mother Nature and basically rapes her. And then God starts all over to try it again and again but he keeps failing. Not understanding that his creations will ultimately destroy everything(Mother Nature and beauty) over and over, over greed and self importance. That's just my take.
There are some really interesting ideas in the film. But it will infuriate most people. tell me what you guys thought.

The film really is about the bible and since Mother is naive the whole movie is her begging people not to do sinful or damaging stuff in her house.
There are NO scares, no secrets or plot to really follow etc. It's not really entertaining in a traditional sense. It's very abstract.

Not scary imo but there is some really unexpected stuff all throughout the third act.

Easily Aronofsky's most divisive film. Overall, I liked it but yeah a LOT of movie goers are going to absolutely despise this film.

I heard the movie is very intense in the third act, is that true? I wanted to say something else. No spoilers. When are you seeing the movie? It has been 24 hours after I've seen this movie and this movie is literally all I can think about. Keep in mind I almost walked out and when it was over I walked out hating it, absolute hatred and anger. Yet like some critics said after its resting with me and I'm thinking more and more about it, I'm becoming more and more intrigued by it. Almost to the point of wanting to see it again. It's like the film has invaded my brain. Mother may be the worst movie I've seen this year but is simultaneously one of the best in its own weird way. I know that doesn't make any sense on the surface. I think I may end up loving the film. I'm a big fan of the director. Its a love or hate movie. Be sure to take down your review as soon as you've seen it and then come back to it a few days/weeks later and see if your thoughts have changed for better or worse. I'm super interested in how this is impacting people lol.

Absolute pile of pretentious shit. Literally, a waste of 2 hours of my life. As someone whose knowledge of the bible and its stories runs as deep as basic knowledge picked up from trivia nights and game shows, the "metaphor" was sort of there, but wasn't truly accessible enough to be considered allegorical or even satirical. It's just there. The symbolism of the crystal - an essential part of the film - is not anything I've ever heard of in the Book of Genesis, so why is it there ? Likewise the blood soaked hole in the floorboards, the mysterious yellow aspirin she drinks, the Kristen Wiig character, the strange character interactions with Lawrence's character. In my mind, I think Aronofsky had a great idea for a film, retelling the essential Biblical story with the addition of Mother Nature and a nod towards human destruction of nature through religion. I get that. But holy hell why did he throw in so many metaphors that make no sense and the average viewer would barely be able to comprehend ? Why did he waste so much time in telling the story with entire passages that make no impact on the (supposed) overall message. And the ending makes absolutely no fucking sense at all if that's the story he's trying to tell. In other words, save your time and give it a miss. And if you are in anyway religious, steer well clear.........

Perhaps he just didn't care what the "average" viewer was going to think and had another audience in mind. Not all movies should be put together with the goal of pleasing everyone, or even most people.

He makes weird movies at his own pace and does what he wants. The studio knew what they were doing as well. They knew this was not a horror/thriller yet they marketed it that way hoping to trick people. Also luring them in with amazing actors and placing the actors in a position of "awards season". Just like them marketing Noah as a bible epic for Christians(lol). The budget isnt that big. I think they will break even. Most of the money probably went to the cast.

Last I checked, the entire point of movies is to entertain people and get people to watch them. Only a pretentious twat would deliberately make a film that leaves the majority of its viewers at best confused, worse extremely angry they wasted their time and money to see it. Honestly, I will NEVER watch another Aronofsky film ever again, just like I stay away from anything made by David Lynch. What's the point of watching something that makes you angry and confused ? I've got better things to do with my life.

The fact "I can explain it all, besides....." a part of the movie that is literally shown 3-4 times proves to me that it has far too many metaphors. The whole point is to understand EVERY metaphor, not sit there after viewing it thinking why was 'that' in there ?

The whole point is to understand EVERY metaphor, not sit there after viewing it thinking why was 'that' in there ? I would argue the whole point is to not get it right away and to get there from discussion/repeat viewings. And just thinking about it in general. If the whole movie is an allegory I wouldn't want it to be extremely obvious. literally some of the most coveted movies in history have things in them that are metaphors that aren't clear or the meaning isn't known to this day. What would be the pleasure in a metaphor so superficial? Again I'm not saying that makes the movie good, but still. Edit: I will agree that if there really is no meaning.. then that's really dumb imo.

I found it tedious and irritating. I didn't see the "movie as metaphor" or "god and man" aspects at all during the movie. I can see it now you've said it, but it doesn't make the movie any less tedious and irritating.
