I always marvel at how short-sighted the NHL can be at times. Granted, I don't follow it as closely as I used to, but holy hell, they suck at marketing their players (worse than MLB), they are atrocious at marketing the brand and they are just...not well run. How many lockouts are they going to endure under Gary Bettman before realizing that doing that alienates their largely blue collar fanbase who have zero patience for that shit, to say nothing of how pigheaded the last one was?
And now this? I'm no gung ho Olympics fan or anything, but to me Olympic hockey (along with the various skiing events) is a sports highlight. You don't have to have a rooting interest to appreciate how much fun that tournament is. Having a better crop of talent only makes it better for the casual fan and the casual fan tuning in is how you improve the brand. Stupid.

I completely agree with the sentiment here. I will not go out of my way to watch the NHL, but Olympic hockey is an event for me. To echo klaw, market your sport and your players NHL. Watching these players in the Olympics may create the interest for me to sit down and watch a NHL game.
We have the best athletes compete in every sport but hockey. How stupid can the NHL be?

Not to mention that the NHL is always talking about "selling the brand internationally". What better opportunity to do that than the Olympic Games?

Brian Burke was on TSN earlier this week, said the owners offered to take the Olympics off any/all collective bargaining talks, which essentially would've kept players available to go even during NHL work stoppages. He says the NHLPA said no way.
They'll be going to Beijing in 2022, 91% chance I'd say.

As far as I understand it the NHLPA messed up. NHL owners don't want their players to go. They don't want their schedule interrupted for close to a month. The collective agreement allows them to NOT let their players go. It's the players' fault for not understanding what was at stake. NHL players (at least the Canadian ones) are probably not the brightest bulbs and most put in little effort into understanding what's going on off the ice.
I'd say it's all but guaranteed that they'll be going to China. The IIHF might relinquish it's grip a little and allow some money to flow into the NHL's pockets.
