Just to let y'all know. I have two bushfires burning within 5km of my house and my town is being rained with ash and is constantly under a pale of smoke, which is why I haven't been on here much lately. Hopefully bob's ok, the Central Coast is in the firing line right now too. Big fire not far from Gosford. Nightmare. It’s been going on for a few weeks now. I hear the national govt is getting pellets for not being engaged enough.

Im all good - no really big fires near me. Im a bit further northeast of the fires that are burning in the Gosford area. Today is a bit better than yesterday as far as the smoke and haze go, but somedays it has been absolutely shit. The closest they have come to my house is about 5-6km west of here. The freeway (a great natural fire break if there ever was one) stopped a fire dead in its tracks. Didnt stop my pool from being covered completely in ash and blackened leaves.

Its not as though ScoMo wrote a decree that NSW would have all these fires. He cant make it suddenly rain either. The amount of complete 'blame' the government is copping is ridiculous. By all means, make the link between climate change, droughts and the governments lack of affirmative action. But dont carry on as though LNP members were lighting fires and compromising firefighters......

To explain, the PM has no direct responsibility for emergency response. That falls squarely on the shoulders of David Elliott, the NSW Minister for Emergency Services, who answers to Gladys Berijiklian the NSW Premier, who is ultimately responsible for any failures in Hazard Reduction and Emergency Response.
So ScoMo is getting blamed for 3 main reasons 1. People have no concept of the separation of powers, whuch is why they also blame the federal government for under funded state schools and hospitals and probably even that pot hole on their local street. 2. Many feel he should have declared a national State of Emergency given there are also fires in WA, SA, QLD and Victoria. 3. The lack of action on climate change which, as bob indicated, has been irrationally argued by his opponents who literally called the government "arsonists."
But there's a lot of factors. You can't perform hazard reduction in National Parks, so they are now trying to perform hazard reduction in close proximity to inhabited areas during a total fire ban. The fact we're in the middle of the worse drought in living memory. The polarisation of politics that has caused governments and oppositions to champion extreme "bases" which has deadlocked any meaningful debate on issues like climate change.
Speaking of which, had a sausage and did an interview with Albo out at Bilpin this morning. Relatable and straight forward as always.

I take it Albo is Albanese, the Labour Party leader?

I am a journalist, well sort of. I'm actually a bit of a utility for Rural Press at the moment. My "office" is in North Western Sydney, but my work is mainly in the regions. I worked for papers all over the West of the state when I was a cadet. I studied at Charles Sturt University Mitchell in Bathurst when that still met something which makes me a certified member of the Mitchell Mafia or, as I prefer to call it, a well connected journalist.
And yep, Albo is Anthony Albanese, one of the more grounded and likable Sydney-based politicians. He waals raised by a single mum and had a real job before he got into parliament.
Another likable bloke who I'd never vote for: Tony Abbott.

Seems Pakistan has started well in the 2nd leg...but of course they are Pakistan...Lately SL has been the team that has come up with more surprise wins on rare occasions than Pakistan.

Pakistan has come good in the 2nd innings. Don't see them losing this one. Either they win or draw and I believe SL will likely lose this one.

It's terrible folks. The smoke is absolutely dreadful through most of the state. Shame they didn't have Jude Bolton commentating to tell us how far Canberra is from Sydney. Given he thinks the Blue Mountains are 10 minutes from Homebush, he'd probably say it was about 40 clicks.
This morning, I was leaving the police station in Lithgow and a man walked up to me saying his house burned down yesterday and he had been named as missing. I knew the local fire chiefs had very grave doubts for the survival of this missing man, but there he was: safe in front of me. Gave him a big hug and told him he'd just made a lot of people very happy.
I'm relatively safe as my house is a fair way from bushland, but some friends in Clarence and Dargan lost their homes yesterday. It was a shitter of a day. Time for bed.

But happy for that man you met yesterday. Hope things improve soon.

Good news about the missing man at least.

Anyone has idea why the cricket world cup after 87 happened in 92 instead of 91? I quite don;t like that they didn't go in sequence of 4.

Probably due to the Aussie summer. I'd say it was pitched as 1991-92, but there was no way the then ACB was going to give up their boxing day and New Year's test or the B&H World Series, so the whole thing was played in February and March. 1992. Also you had Saffers return in late 1991 which made it a 9 team round robin rather than the 8 team round robin it was originally scheduled as. They got back on terms in 99 anyway so no real harm done.

I think the initial plan was for it to be in October/November 91 and have early games up north in Cairns and Darwin, later games in Auckland and Wellington. South Africa threw the spanner in the works. As it was, they played 1 game in Mackay - and it rained all day and only an over was bowled. I have read that the 1996 World Cup featured extra teams (Kenya, Netherlands and UAE) because so many cricket associations were promised a game in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India.
