He has greatly improved as a captain, he's probably culpable in the bizarre selection cock-up for this match, but the blame for the collapse is hardly his fault. Again it should be noted that he often comes in with England 3 down for not very many runs, he isn't going to make big innings to bail them out all the time.

Really not unexpected, I have been banging on for a long time that England are prone to collapse because the top order is so fragile. So often England find themselves 50 odd for 4 but the middle and lower order bail them out, it just can't happen all the time - as evidenced in Auckland last year. Put the fragile batters up against a very useful pace attack and you got problems, and boy did they bowl well. The omission of Broad for an extra spinner now looks a calamity of a decision!! England simply have not found replacements for Cook and Strauss and the number 3 position is a poisoned chalice. The bowlers have kept them in it - just - but it's most unlikely that this batting line up could chase more than 300 against fast bowlers on a quirky pitch.
Good for the Test Match scene though and a kick up the arse for England.
Just checked the highlights. Bloody good bowling. Agree with Bob that Roach has underperformed and not done justice to his talent.
I am sure no English fan would like to see his side lose but a Windies victory will be a big thing for them. England can still come back to win the series after losing the first match though.
Here's all wickets package for those who want to see again.

Oz 256 for 5
Labuschagne out for 81, can Head get the ton?Nope. Australia are destined to not have anyone get a ton it seems. In the 80s as well, bloody hell!

there is one more young west indian fast bowler called OSHANE THOMAS who made a big impression in india. man, i really hope this windies attack develops into something really potent. cricket has suffered due to a weak west indian team since around 2003. time for a revival of windies cricket.

Yeah...easily 145+ bowler. He could touch well over 150. Just hope he could be in team and remain healthy.

I wasn't expecting to wake up to the news Holder had scored a double! I like the man, but wow. Just as surprising to see England 0-56 at stumps. 629 to win or someone needs ti channel Mike Atherton and bat for two straight days to draw.

Houston Rockets has made team India obsolete for me. I just came to realise there's a match going on featuring India and 33 overs has already passed.
I don't think England's gonna chase this mammoth total but boy o boy there's not been a dismissal in this match since a long long time and even Dowrich got a 100. And Holder (no disrespect intended) got a 200! Does anyone want to make predictions on how much England can score?

Okay, my guess is that England will score around 460 runs. Other members, I encourage you to make predictions too!
A predictable win for the Aussies.

England make 570 Good win by the Australians, Cummins showing his class. Sri Lanka should be disappointed with 144 and 139 - it was a fair better pitch and conditions than two sub 150 scores. India pasted NZ and are really starting to flex their muscles. Frankly, it’s about time - India should be dominating world cricket in a fashion unbeknownst to the game in its history.
And, lastly, Happy Australia Day to all, and Happy Republic Day to our Indian friends....

At the end of the day teams chasing 4th fall short but anything that can create doubts will be interesting. I honestly believe England has a better ODI side than India with all their powerful hitters.

Okay, my guess is that England will score around 460 runs. Other members, I encourage you to make predictions too! A predictable win for the Aussies. I predict England will be 132 for 2 at Lunch and after looking comfortable at 132 for 1 - an opening batsman who looked untroubled will miss a simple one from a part time spinner and change the dynamic of the innings. You couldn't make it up. Elsewhere though, "REALLY" impressed with Richardson, add that to the brilliant Cummins, the accuracy of Hazelwood and Starc's (I'm not a fan if truth be told) pace and you got many England fans who need to wake up if they think The Ashes will be anything but close!
