If so, how did the audience react to Vader's reveal to Luke?

If so, how did the audience react to Vader's reveal to Luke? , but that was such a long, long time ago that I can't exactly recall (I don't even remember how I reacted). I'm sure most were shocked.

If so, how did the audience react to Vader's reveal to Luke? Yes, of course. They were shocked, obviously. Fun Fact: I already knew!

If so, how did the audience react to Vader's reveal to Luke? One of my teachers on the following day or the following Monday said that Vader was lying...she was obviously WRONG. I think back then most people thought he was lying.

Fun Fact: I already knew! Where did you find-out ahead of time that Vader was going to tell Luke that he's his father? Did you read it, heard it on the tv or radio, or did someone tell you?

Saw it on release. I was 17.
No idea how other people reacted to the reveal in theaters. I was too engrossed in the film to study the audience.
I saw the first film in a theater too.

Driving cross country, imagining STAR WARS sequels after the first film, we worked out that Vader was Luke's father, that Leia was his sister and also a Jedi. You don't need the Boys Big Book of Screenwriting cliches to work this stuff out.
However, I did predict Leia would turn to the darkside.

I saw it in the theaters in 1980,but I thought that particular scene was actually pretty funny--I didn't like the first Star Wars movie, thought it was dumb, but I did like Empire Strikes Back a lot

You don't need the Boys Big Book of Screenwriting cliches to work this stuff out. That's extra well done since those twists weren't thought of until the sequels.

I did, and I gotta be honest, I don't really remember any audible gasps or anything like that in the theatre. I do remember the reactions after the movie were mixed. Some didn't like it, some did, but everyone seemed to be excited about the prospect. Dramatically speaking it was a pretty cool twist, back then. Nowadays some variation of it has been done to death.

BULLSHIT! I call BULLSHIT on that! You did NOT work out that Vader was their father or that Luke and Leia were brother and sister! You are SOOOOOOOOO full of shit. There is absolutely NOTHING in Star Wars (ANH) that points to any of that.
And I'll even go this far: Even George fucking Lucas didn't know any of that either! That was stuff he and Lawrence Kasdan came up with while writing the script to ESB.
All that being said, wmcclain... I hope that we can be friends after this. (lol)

I was about 4 or 5 years old and was at the drive in movie theater occupying one of the seats of my parent's 1979 Pontiac LeMans Safari station wagon. I don't know what other people thought, but I was really paying attention to the Falcon evade those Tie Fighters in the asteroid belt!!!! I could care less of Vader was his father or not...
