I saw Message From the King, a Netflix action revenge movie, seemed like a 70's blaxploitation movie in many ways. Surprisingly good, Chadwick Boseman is a star on the rise. I remember him from some NBC summer series called Persons Unknown, a bunch of people are trapped within a small town and being observed. MESSAGE FROM THE KING - which was shot on location in Cape Town (standing in for L.A.), South Africa - was a nice surprise. I enjoyed it too. Check out Boseman, as Jackie Robinson, in 42 and, as James Brown, in GET ON UP. So it was shot on location in Cape Town, it looked like it was but I wasn't sure. What did you think of Chadwick Boseman's South African accent? I thought he sounded spot on, I have a few SA friends and dated a girl from Joberg back in the 00's. I did see 42 and that's when I knew Chadwick had the serious actor chops, a very good film. I've yet to see Get On Up yet though. We will soon see him in the Black Panther film, he was already in Captain America: Civil War in the role.

Very well stated! That whole lived in quality you speak of, all the boys were at the exact age their characters were, no casting older for younger here. And the two boys playing cousins were actual cousins in real life. The no-star cast made you feel they could be even more real. The jealousy of the cousin of his cousin being friends with someone else suddenly was very real, I've experienced it, seems like the writer/director must have as well. Curious as to how you came to see this film. It aired here in Canada on one of our cable movie channels. I think I read about somewhere and decided to give it a watch.

Hi Planet X! I first want to say thank you for the Juhyo No Yoromeki rec, which has just arrived in the post today. Seeing you tantalizingly call it a "crime procedural like no other" I was wondering what was the main aspect of Castle of Sand that stood out to you most? Hi there MDF ... was great to see your mention and glowing review of the Hungarian Classic HalΓ‘los tavasz , Deadly Spring . What a great start to a wonderful journey I just love the language and treasure many Hungarian Classic in fact at least three would sit in my top 20 ... Without giving too much away , for me one of the main entertaining aspects of Nomura's fascinating mystery/thriller, police procedural 'Suna no utsuwa' , Castle of Sand, is the absorbing meticulous detail that follows the criminal investigation. In time the identity of a murdered man is painstakingly revealed, eventually moving the case onto a search for motive and suspects. Beautifully crafted with outstanding script and cinematography A highlight are all train trips undertaken as part of the investigation, which crisscross the main island of Honshu from the North-East to the West and then to the South and the city of Ise before coming back to Tokyo. These wonderful journeys cross so many different Japanese landscapes, are a real treat. The multi faceted story evolves naturally into a complex and tightly structured human character drama with a focus on ones past and that relationship with the present, Nomura also presents an important social issue, a feature of the crime stories of Seicho Matsumoto. Happy Viewing....
