Family Ties, though it was set in a fictional version of my hometown (Route 40, not Route 41), is instantly better than Growing Pains.

Growing Pains was good ... Family Ties was watchable at best. Growing Pains 6/10 Family Ties 5/10

Family Ties was classier. The Alex P Keaton character was a great idea to play against the normal tv teenager type. I enjoyed the Growing Pains cast better though.

I liked both shows, but I think Family Ties was more intelligently written and funnier. I still enjoyed Growing Pains, though.

Family Ties had Tom Hanks! Who played Elyse's alcoholic younger brother!

It's ok to like both, but Family Ties was clearly better. Growing Pains was a little more after school special.

Growing Pains easily. Family Ties was okay, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it.

I voted for " They were equally good " because I watched both shows back in the day and on reruns in the mid to late 1990's too . However I haven't watched these shows since then but I do remember these being quality family shows for it's main decade - the 1980's . Thanks Feologild Oakes for your subject post .

Tracey Gold was clearly the superior sitcom babe. I exhausted box after box of kleenex after that episode of her in the red dress.

To sort of quote Martin Landau in Ed Wood: " Growing Pains does not deserve to smell Family Ties' !"

Family Ties. I started re-watching it a while ago, but got distracted by other vintage shows...I should get back to re-watching it.

both were good, for their time. both had a baby during the show. both mothers were professional.
liked how quasi accurate FT was with mrs Keaton's profession. i actually had those pictures of the houses with floor plans attached at my house. i studied them often and discovered my knack for architecture, building 'planning' and floor plans. i still draw my own floor plans to this day.
both had some sort of 'very special' episodes that needed to be addressed at the time. racism, death, guilt surrounding by that death, 'undesirable' boyfriends and friends, drugs -- illegal or otherwise, creepy office crap, under age booze abuse, booze abuse to begin with...
blah blah blah...
i actually enjoyed them [didn't laugh it up] back then and continue to like those 'special' episodes today. that is the problem with today. those special episodes were designed [with the hopes that parents actually sat down with their kids to watch the show with them] to spark some sort of family discussion.
now what do the family discussions consist of: you're baby daddy to how many bitches? you did how many guys during the week you conceived 'our' child and now you don't know who baby daddy is? people with gold teeth bitching about not having any money....
that is, if families even discuss anything today... don't think they do.

Family Ties, though it too had early & later lulls.
Kangaroo episode, try not to laugh. I dare you.
