For many years I got on this live album kick and I still have quite a number in my collection. Eventually I came to appreciate studio albums more. There's some material which is difficult to adequately reproduce live. These are probably my ten favorites.
1. Yes - Yessongs 2. Rush - Exit...Stage Left 3. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Live Rust 4. Jethro Tull - Bursting Out 5. Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same 6. Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous 7. Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Pictures At An Exhibition 8. Average White Band - Person To Person 9. Mountain - Twin Peaks 10. Deep Purple - Made in Japan

Probably Made in Japan. I've listened to it nearly 100 times.

While I can appreciate the ability to faithfully reproduce studio material on stage (especially with bands such as Yes and Rush), live albums that sound just like the studio albums usually bore me. I want live albums to have something that separates them from the studio albums other than the crowd - such as extended jams, alternate takes, and audience participation. Otherwise I'll just listen to the studio versions. That said... KISS - Alive! Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive Queen - Live Killers Steve Vai - Sound Theories Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco Joe Bonamassa - Live from the Royal Albert Hall U2 - Elevation 2001: Live from Boston Cheap Trick: At Budokan King's X - Live All Over the Place Hedvig Mollestad Trio - Evil in Oslo Alice Cooper - A Fistful of Alice Simple Minds - Live in the City of Light Any live Phish record

I don't expect it to be exactly the same, but for example, I was thinking of Aerosmith's "Live! Bootleg" (1978) which seemed kind of sloppy. And when I hear Steely Dan's live material, it just doesn't sound quite as good to me. I don't know. Maybe it's the way it's recorded or possibly it's different when you're actually there. Of course, the studio versions have the advantage of spending weeks or months polishing it up and in concert you only get one chance. When my sister moved out of our parents' house, she left behind a few albums. One was Kiss "Alive!" which I confiscated and grew to love. I saw them in 1976 and their sound system was excellent, just like on that live album.

Sloppy is also something that separates it from the studio recording. As with any live Cheap Trick, sloppy can be fun. That live Van Halen POS, though, is not a good example. Haha. I do wonder how much of KISS Alive! was overdubbed, but at the same time, I don't care. It's a great album and always a pleasure to spin.

I see there are two. Since I'm unfamiliar with both, I'm not sure which one you mean. I don't know why they never released one from their golden years. I saw them three times with DLR and any of those would've been fine.

I was referring to the Tokyo Dome album. It's really bad. I guess something can be said for its rawness, but I won't listen to it again. Once was enough, and twice was torture.

You really can't include Think Lizzy as a "live" album though.
