This is a German documentary/propaganda movie filmed during the Summer Olympics in Berlin. Is this film still around, or did Hitler order all prints and negatives destroyed after the black American athlete Jesse Owens made mincemeat of the idea of "Aryan supremacy"?

Just a theory. There might have been an export version that showed Owen won, and a Germany only version that omited that part.

If you think about it, the question's inoperative. Those games took place in August of '36 - two years before the German release of OLYMPIA - and Hitler was there to witness Owens's victories. If he'd wanted Riefenstahl's footage of them suppressed, it would never have seen the light of day, much less have been edited into her finished film only to be destroyed after its completion. I've seen both parts of Riefenstahl's film and, say what you will about her politics, she sure knew what to do with a camera and in an editing room.

Another movie made around the same time was CHARLIE CHAN AT THE OLYMPICS, one of my favorite Chan movies. Charlie was involved basically because #1 son Lee was on the Olympic swim team. I believe that there was newsreel footage of the actual Olympic track team, with Lee's friends cheering on Jesse Owens. Another remarkable thing about this movie was the utilization of a primitive form of fax machine that helped Charlie catch the killer.

If you want to fork over about $300 (or thereabouts) Criterion is releasing remastered versions of most of the Olympic films made since whenever the first one was made. Olympia is part of the set. It's supposed to be pretty pristine. I believe it comes out in December.
