Hmmm, if Israelites were forbidden contact with spirit mediums, & Saul himself was instrumental in the same chapter to get rid of spirit mediums in obedience to God and then turns to a spirit medium to talk to Samuel, it would seem that would be the perfect thing for a trickster demon to do since it solidifies Saul's support of false worship which, as king, has a profound impact on the whole kingdom. Maybe, but that's not what the Bible says happened. If it was a demon impersonating Saul, instead of Saul himself, that would mean the Bible is lying. The Bible states a lot of things that the character gets wrong.
Job didn't even know Satan was involved in his suffering and so the whole story is told under his assumption that God was causing it.
However, what does the Bible say?
It says that Saul never saw Samuel, That God had left him, that the medium was interpreting what she saw to him, & that one of his sons survived despite the medium saying they would die.
Of course, I guess it's possible that God tricked Saul too and prophesied to him in a way he would listen as opposed to his past dismissal of God's proclamations.
