A few critics quotes:
"While this might be a bold statement to make, I do believe that Blade Runner 2049 is better than the original." - We Live Entertainment "Blade Runner 2049 is a triumph. As good as you want to be, and better than you could have expected." - HeyUGuys "It may seem premature to ascribe the word 'masterpiece' to a legacyquel of a heady sci-fi head-scratcher from the '80s, but its audacity and formal perfection - not to mention its thematic weight - leave no other alternative." - Consequence of Sound "Forty years after his death, people still argue over which Elvis, the slim young Adonis or the portly middle aged crooner, was better. Forty years from now, people may be having that debate about these Blade Runners." - London Evening Standard "Blade Runner 2049 supersedes its predecessor in a number of ways, and is not only a brilliant sci-fi movie, but one of the best movies of the year." - Nerdist "Like The Godfather Part II, it's a sequel to a very celebrated film which may actually be better than the original." - Independent "It just has to be experienced on the biggest screen possible. Blade Runner 2049 is a narcotic spectacle of eerie and pitiless vastness, by turns satirical, tragic and romantic." - The Guardian "Villeneuve's film is a direct continuation in every respect; it's difficult to imagine anyone - even Ridley Scott - making a better Blade Runner sequel." - Total Film "Visually immaculate, swirling with themes as heart-rending as they are mind-twisting, 2049 is, without doubt, a good year. And one of 2017's best." - Empire "One of the most spectacular, provocative, profound and spiritually staggering blockbusters of our time." - Daily Telegraph "We've grown so used to lowest-common-denominator blockbuster cinema that it's almost shocking to watch a big science fiction movie, featuring these kinds of stars, swinging for the fences in this way." - The Verge

A lot of praise for the cast, for Gosling and Leto, and especially a lot of praise for Sylvia Hoeks and Harrison Ford. Empire even said: "And if you think Ford is on easy territory as yet another timeworn version of a classic character he could play in his sleep, think again. This is possibly the best performance of his career, Deckard’s situation testing the veteran actor in ways we’ve rarely seen before.'
Is a supporting nod for Harrison Ford a possibility? That would be so amazing.

Second rotten review from Michelle Alexandria from Eclipse Magazine saying "Everything wrong with sequels. There's not one original, awe inspiring moment in this film. It's cold, emotionally inert, uninspired and ultimately an empty experience. (D)".
I of course haven't seen Blade Runner 2049 yet, but I would be very surprised if I would agree with her after seeing it considering what I've read and seen so far. However, I'm always interested in people who have a different opinion than the majority, because they often have a different take on the movie than others, but a quick look on her Rotten Tomatoes page shows that she probably just has a very different taste in movies than me. She gave Fifty Shades of Grey a B and Age of Extinction an A... an A for Age of Extinction.

Up to 85 on Metacritic (28 reviews) now that a few new reviews are in as well. Most reviews, probably around 20 more for Metacritic and 200 more for Rotten Tomatoes, are expected on the 6th of October and the week afterwards. Here are a few quotes from the new reviews.
"Blade Runner 2049, the superb new sequel by Denis Villeneuve, doesn’t just honor that legacy, but, arguably, surpasses it, with a smart, grimly lyrical script, bleakly beautiful cinematography and an even deeper dive into questions of the soul." - Washington Post (5/5)
"Take a moment to absorb and interpret and appreciate the vibrant and gorgeous and sometimes brutal and mind-bending and occasionally incomprehensible hallucinatory epic that is Blade Runner 2049, which stands with the likes of “The Godfather Part II” and “Terminator 2” and “Aliens” as a sequel worthy of the original classic." - Chicago-Sun Times (4/4)
"One of the most deeply philosophical and challenging sci-fi films of all time." - Roger Ebert (3.5/4)

More people are starting to see the movie now, Chris Stuckmann gave it an A+ and said "2049 is one of the best films ever made, it's one of the best sequels ever made. You should go to the biggest screen with the loudest speakers and experience this film fresh. This is the type of movie that reminds people why movies exist and how they can transport us to another world." I'll probably see it myself this weekend.

Original post: Just watched the movie. I'll edit this post later, but for now all I'll say is: it's a masterpiece, a beautiful masterpiece. Denis, you have officially entered legendary status.
Edit: 2049 is even better after a night of sleep. I can't think of anything else right now than 2049. All of this is non-spoiler btw. It'll be interesting to have a spoiler discussion later when everyone has seen it, because there's a lot to discuss.
So yeah, I'm still stunned. There weren't moments when I teared up, but somehow this is still one of the most emotional movies I can remember. The plot twists are just so elegant, I had no idea what would happen. You think you know what's going to happen and then you're wrong. But even if you try to think steps ahead and be like 'this is just what they want me to think' you're still not able to predict what'll happen. So please see this movie fresh without having the plot spoiled.
First off, many scenes in 2049 look like a futuristic set of paintings. It reminds me of Kubrick, the way the camara and especially color is used is unbelievable. The first Blade Runner had an unreal soundtrack, 2049 (while also having a killer soundtrack) distinguishes itself with the most beautiful use of color I've ever seen.
All the acting performances are top notch and there isn't a single person miscast. Ryan Gosling is perfect as one of the major characters and will probably get awards recognition. De Armas is great, Leto is spectecular when he's on screen. He's the type of actor that's terrific in a good movie and not so terrific in a bad movie. Robin Wright, Dave Batista (he definitely isn't Guardians-like comic relief this time) & Mackenzie Davis are also very good. But to be honest there are 2 performances that stand out: Sylvia Hoeks has solidified her position in Hollywood with her performance. And of course Harrison Ford, he knocks it out of the park and then some. Wouldn't be surprised if he also gets a lot of awards recognition.
The atmosphere of 2049 is very special and it is paced so well, it was almost 3 hours but I wouldn't mind if it was even an hour longer. That's because it doesn't feel like a small movie, this is an epic, gigantic in scope while also paying so much attention to detail and for example facial expressions.
The themes that are being discussed have been discussed many times in movies, but almost never as deep and beautiful as here. Ford was right, The script is indeed a masterpiece. The writing is just so good, there's a scene with Leto's character that contains incredible dialogue. I haven't talked about the plot so far and I don't intend to. You have to experience this story yourself, just like Arrival all the storylines and plot points fall together so perfectly when the movie ends that I get chills just thinking about it.
One last thing I want to say is that this isn't an action movie. It's an experience, an atmospheric sci-fi epic about life and its meaning. There are still a couple of action scenes in there and they are amazing (I'm running out of superlatives). There are two specific action scenes that are honestly two of the best action scenes I've ever seen. Especially during one of them, my jaw dropped on the floor. The thing is, many movies have a climax containing the best scene of the movie. But every scene in 2049 feels like 'that one best scene'. I can't tell because of spoilers, but I already just thought of 4 other scenes that are masterpieces in their own right.
See this movie if you love movies, you will not regret it. Denis Villeneuve has done the impossible: make a sequel to a classic, in this day and age where making a big budget movie with 100% artistic freedom is nearly impossible, that may even be better than the original. 10/10 best of year so far.
