Pick one of these seven essential sci-fi flicks from the 1950's, chosen for purposes of this poll considering various criteria such as 1) original stories and novel concepts; 2) achievement in fx; 3) continued relevance; and 4) enduring classic status.

Very difficult for me to decide between The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds, but Day wins out for me because of its social relevance. The alien is basically telling us to get our act together as a species to save Earth. Doesn't get deeper than that. Nikto Barada Klatu!

That's okay. It's supposed to be a difficult question posed to provoke discussion. I voted for George Pal's "War of the Worlds." I still think it's a powerful film.

I own these three on DVD:
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Forbidden Planet (1956) The Thing from Another World (1951)
It was practically a toss-up for me between the first two. So I voted for The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) so it would be tied with Forbidden Planet (1956).

I chose "War of the Worlds". It had good color, great special effects for 1953, and time seemed to fly by when I watched it. It was hard to choose, because I liked almost every movie in your list. The only one I haven't seen is "When Worlds Collide". I need to look that one up to watch. My top three were "War of the Worlds", "The Thing From Another World" and "Forbidden Planet".

It was a tough choice, but I selected Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.

FORBIDDEN PLANET here. It is a real "sense of wonder" film, about the future and another world, with as much beauty and awe-fulness as adventure and suspense, and altogether well-blended. Some awkwardness of dialog, but that's never taken away from it for me. The music score is one-of-a-kind (sadly), and every bit as enthralling as the visuals. Too bad there weren't more like it, to balance out the monster-invaders variations, dystopic futures and eventual return to horrors, both supernatural and natural, as the primary genre of fantasy fiction film.

Forbidden Planet, with The Day The Earth Stood Still a very close second.

Great idea for a poll, and all of these movies are special in their own ways. I went with Forbidden Planet simply because of its grandeur, sense of awe, and the fantastic imagination that went into creating the Krell civilization. But also a big tip of the cap to The Thing From Another World and Invasion of the Body Snatchers for capturing the paranoia of the times, and for setting the standard for all future sci-fi/horror hybrids.

I picked "The Thing" but had a struggle between that and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." Two great movies period, not just sci-fi.
