This episode was good and bad at the same time. In terms of acting, technical quality and writing, it worked just fine... but as a prequel to THE BIG BANG THEORY? It's too different. It wouldn't bother me if the 2 shows didn't belong in the same universe... but Jim Parsons is the narrator.
This show tries to show SHELDON as he was when T.B.B.T. started (socially awkward and annoying but funny) rather than in the past 9 seasons (antisocial and just plain annoying). I'm glad, but it doesn't work with his parents. MARY has always been a Southern religious stereotype. We never saw GEORGE SR. but they always talked about him as a drunk. This show is trying to show them as a loving mother who happens to be religious and a father who doesn't understand his son but would like to. How can I take them seriously when they've always been jokes rather than characters? Also, MARY spoils SHELDON? I don't buy it. In her very first T.B.B.T. episode, we saw her as patient but strict when necessary.
If the makers really want to treat their characters as humans and their conflicts with depth accompanied by laughs, then they should've inserted that into T.B.B.T. or created an original show. A prequel that messes with the canon isn't the way to go.
Not to mention Bob Newhart's cameo.
