I've seen most but not all these films. I gave West Side Story the slight edge over Guns Of Navarone.

I actually voted for " The Innocents " for me it seemed like the most intriguing storyline film for that particular year too . My other choices from this list after this one - West Side Story Splendor in the Grass A Raisin in the Sun The Parent Trap ( not on this list ) Thanks Feologild Oakes for your subject post .

The Hustler (1961) ; HANDS DOWN! ; it's Paul Newman's #1 movie that he was the clear lead in. he was born to play the role of Fast Eddie Felson and the sequel to this movie (The Color of Money (1986)) is underrated. it's pretty safe for me to say no other movie from 1961 holds a candle to it. NOTE: it's the only movie from 1961 i have seen. but... given i scored that a 9/10 it makes it very unlikely anything else will come close to it given it's within my Top 26 movies in general. p.s. The Hustler is the oldest movie i am a huge fan of even though the oldest movie within My Favorite Movies in general is The Song of Bernadette (1943). but putting that 1943 movie aside The Hustler is the next oldest inline i scored a 7/10 or higher. --------------------------------------------- My favorite Paul Newman movies... 1.Road to Perdition (2002) - 10/10 (masterpiece. a word i rarely use on movies. it's nice to see Newman go out with a bang as this is basically his last movie he was in and when he dies in this movie that's also a great finish/moment.) 2.The Hustler (1961) - 9/10 3.The Color of Money (1986) - 8/10 4.Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (1969) - 7.5-8/10

I voted for 101 Dalmatians, since you had that listed, but my favorite of the year is actually The Pit and the Pendulum.
There are a ton of good ones you didn't list:
The Absent-Minded Professor All in a Night's Work Atlantis: The Lost Continent Babes in Toyland Blast of Silence Blue Hawaii Call Me Genius Carry On Regardless The Colossus of Rhodes The Curse of the Werewolf The Day the Earth Caught Fire Dead Eyes of London The Devil at 4 O'Clock The Devil's Hand Divorce Italian Style Duel of the Titans Erik the Conqueror The Errand Boy Goliath and the Vampires Gorgo Hercules in the Haunted World His and Hers Homicidal The Honeymoon Machine The Mask Master of the World Mothra Mr. Sardonicus Most Dangerous Man Alive Murder She Said Mysterious Island Night Tide No Place Like Homicide! On the Double Operation Snafu The Parent Trap Pocketful of Miracles Scream of Fear Snow White and the Three Stooges The Terror of the Tongs The Thief of Baghdad The Trojan Horse Underworld, U.S.A. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea The Wonders of Aladdin
