I mainly used MSN because everyone at school was on that.
I did use AIM to chat to online friends though. I probably should start using discord and stuff.

what's the reason for this? I've been on aol since 1995 and I always loved the IM aspect of it

I already posted a response to this subject on The Soapbox.
But, I do wonder, does that mean the IM service provided with America Online's (AOL) software going to be discontinued as well? Or did that go away a long time ago?
It's a shame that AIM is disappearing. Though, it makes sense with social media being the way we communicate with other people.
Messaging programs are pretty much a thing of the past. I don't think a company like AOL would dish out money to continue running and maintaining their servers if hardly anybody's going to use it.

To be honest I thought that went away about 10-12 years ago.

Personally I think Facebook is a bunch of bulls-t. I enjoy the chatroom aspect of aol where you can really connect with a whole bunch of people at once in real time.

FYI.
AOL Screws Over Their Customers!
I had trouble connecting to AOL this afternoon by Dialup. My phone service immediately told me that "ALL circuits were busy.". This was with every local number I tried. When I called AOL, They told me ALL of their current Desktop Software, even the current version that you can download from their website, is being discontinued immediately...
Existing members are supposed to download and use "AOL Desktop Gold"...
I was not notified of this change, so I didn't have time to download the program, before they "shut me out".
Early on, the customer service rep, suggested that I reboot my PC, But I did not try it right away. When the call was over, I decided to call my Dad to let him know not to contact me by E-mail, until I am back online...
I didn't think it was the software, based on the problem I had, so I thought I would try dialing again just to see what would happen. Here I am. It may not last long. It may just be temporary. Fortunately, AOL is sending me newer software on a CD, but it won't arrive until around December 20th.
Just a heads up.
If you need help with AOL, call: 1-800-827-6364.
Their offline help sucks, and it took me forever to find their number!

I am really sorry if I sound judgmental but who uses dialup anymore? Well, I do, dumbo... But mainly because the wiring into my neighborhood is old to support the latest advances in top internet options... and I couldn't afford the higher prices for anything better anyway... AOL, still offers dialup all over the country with several different local numbers. So I must not be the only one... or they would have discontinued the service by now. In 2020, when Landlines start shutting down, I'll be forced to get something better, but it won't be top of the line, as that isn't available where I live. I bet AOL will start shutting down their Dialup services then.
