I probably saw this when it aired.
I remember Margaret Hamilton on Sesame Street around the same time which was a notorious episode because it scared a lot of little kids.
Let's face it, she did make a very effective witch.
She was also a teacher. I don't think I would want to be in her class.

Yes, back in the day, I wondered what her class was like.
Evidently her interview for the Witch went something like this:
-WIZARD OF OZ? Oh, I loved that book when I was a child. So who am I playing?
-Well, the Witch.
-The Witch?!?
-Yes. Who else?
She also portrayed Mrs. Frump, Morticia's mother in THE ADDAMS FAMILY (back when Fester was a Frump and Grandmama was an Addams). She was dressed up like Miss Gulch.
She also played Madame Armfeldt in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (where she had a series of interviews with Aljean Harmetz for THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ book). Stephen Sondheim's reaction: "She never had a Liasion in her life!"
