Paul Thomas Anderson Quentin Tarantino (It is hard to defend Death Proof, though)

Christopher Nolan Denis Villeneuve Xavier Dolan Andrei Tarkovsky Darren Aronofsky Paul Thomas Anderson James Cameron Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill: Vol. 1 is his only movie that doesn't work for me)
Death Proof is a great homage film imo. It is purposely very trashy and that is the exact reason I like it so much.

It's all opinion, and will probably be limited to directors with relatively small filmographies
Tarkovsky - seven features, all well above average IMO
Wong Kar-wai - ten features, one so-so (My Blueberry Nights), nothing I'd call a failure
David Lynch - ten features, only one more or less accepted huge failure (Dune)

Patty Jenkins
She directed Monster, which got Charlize Theron an Oscar. And she directed Wonder Woman, which is the #1 movie this summer and #2 movie this year so far (behind only Beauty and the Beast).

Denis Villeneuve seems to be on one hell of a roll here.

Music, too, I guess, although I think we have more overlap there. Some David Lynch films I like a lot, though.

Quentin Tarantino Christopher Nolan James Cameron Denis Villeuneve Alfonso Cuarón Hayao Miyazaki (haven't seen all of his movies yet, but so far all are great)
In another league: J.J. Abrams, I would place him nowhere near my list of favorite directors, but he hasn't made a single movie that I disliked. Most of his movies are okay/good imo.
