I'm sad today that one of my favourite actors, Yaphet Kotto, has died at the age of 81. I've included him before in my list posted on imdb2 of my 10 favourite actors of all-time, partly because he made a lot of the kind of genre movies that are the kind of movies I enjoy most, partly because I've enjoyed watching his work for many years, partly because I always enjoyed hearing him speak in person ... my thoughts are with his friends and family. He was a great actor and an extraordinary character. He'll be missed.
Thanks for the movies, Mr. Kotto ... see you on the other side ...

Have you seen Blue Collar? He's at his best in a wonderful role. Formidable and big hearted.

Yes. I think it's one of director Paul Schrader's finest films. For me, it's one of the great union pictures of the time, another being Martin Ritt's 'Norma Rae' (1979).

In William Wyler's searing final film, THE LIBERATION of L.B. JONES Kotto played Sonny Boy Mosby - who kills a vile white cop in the film's climax. This was the first time that a black man killed a white man on-screen in an American film. PS. THE LIBERATION OF L.B. JONES is an excellent, underrated, one-of-a-kind film set in a grim, deeply racist small town America which I would urge folk here to track down and watch.
