Portugal just need to beat Switzerland at home to qualify so I don't see any problem there. Even the play-offs wouldn't be a disaster.
Wales were never guaranteed anything, and I suspect Argentina will get there in the end anyway.

Daily Star....
...can't see it making much difference to be honest. TV Rights were sold a long time ago, I'm guessing most the sponsors are already tied in to their deals and doubt very much there is a "Gareth Bale get out clause" written into their contracts, and on a wider note if the Russian economy were to miss out on a few rubles from Welsh fans not being there they will more than make up for it by the Irish drinking the place dry.

Argentina have to go to the hugely elevated (9,000+ feet) Estadio Olimpico Atahulpa in Ecuador for their last game. They haven't won in Ecuador on four occasions since 2005.

It is very possible (likely even) that the total TV numbers will be lower if Messi and Ronaldo are not in the World Cup than they would have been if the two were there. But as Stanley wrote, the TV rights have already been sold. FIFA has already made their profit. At most the sponsors will see a smaller return on their investment. Nobody is going to lose money except perhaps the Argentinian and Portuguese broadcasters who must have spent fortunes to secure the TV rights and won't be able to charge quite so much for advertising time.

When Arentina win, like at the WC => final, then because of Messi...but when they fuck up, it's because of the team. Same goes for Portugal and Ronaldo (EC winners).
I had no problem if they wouldn't make it. But I don't see that.
Both have excellent chances to make it the play-offs and thus facing far weaker sides. Portgal will have a top seeding, and Argentina will face New Zeeland or Panama if I'm right...
Portugal vs Italy would be sweet...

Would it not be easier for Portugal to just beat Switzerland tomorrow... at home?

Of course, but even if the Swiss park the bus and it ends in a draw, Portugal will still have an excellent chance to take part in the WC 2018 - most unfortunately... I was more about there worst case scenario to get through. But iIassume that both will squeeze their way through. The bad guys always win: 1918/19, 1945, 2017.
