It shows the reaction to the risen Christ by two disciples who without knowing who he is, have shared supper with him at a roadside tavern. Such is their shock when he reveals himself that in their confusion they upset their table and on the edge nearest the viewer there is a basket of bread teetering on the brink of falling to the floor. Every time I'm in London, I try to make a point of seeing this painting and every time I stand/sit in front of it, I feel compelled to reach out and catch the basket before it falls.
