October patches for Windows and Office are out and already there are early reports of myriad Microsoft Patch Tuesday problems. Woody's rating is MS-DEFCON 2: Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. It looks like Windows 10 users are experiencing the brunt of the issues. Windows 7 patches appear to be relatively trouble-free. My employer pushed the Windows 7 Rollup (KB4041681) to my work computer this morning. There were no apparent issues, but I'm not installing that update on my home system yet.

Woody Leonhard posted the following article today. Get Windows and Office patched – but watch out for creepy-crawliesWe are now at MS-DEFCON 4: There are isolated problems with current patches, but they are well-known and documented on this site. I installed without incident: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - October 2017 (KB890830) 2017-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 (KB4041681) I did NOT install the optional .NET rollup, which did not include any security updates this month. As Woody says, "As is always the case, DON’T CHECK ANYTHING THAT’S UNCHECKED."
