I would have to say Woody Allen. Most of his films are good but not like they were in the 70s.

If you mean popular films then Steven Spielberg. The films that make his best of list tend to be Duel, Jaws, and perhaps Raiders.

By popular do you mean popcorn flicks as opposed to Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan? Jurassic Park was (and remains) incredibly popular and that came out in 1993.

I mean films that have remained popular critically and also by audiences. I dont think Schindler's List or SPR have remained popular with audiences. Jurassic Park was praised for its FX not so much for Spielberg's direction. Jaws and Duel still get good ratings from critics and audiences.

William Friedkin - In the 1970s, he directed The French Connection, The Exorcist, and the greatly overlooked and underrated The Boys in the Band. In the 1980s, his only noteworthy movie was To Live and Die in L.A. (and arguably Cruising). But since 1985, he has really faded (although I've noticed some posters seem to like Killer Joe).
Note: I didn't count The Hunted (2003) which I liked, but seems largely unseen or forgotten.
