Favorite time of the year. Film makers really dropped the ball on this one - where's the new Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. opening tonight - a 'Friday the 13th - during Halloween Season

There is a horror film coming out tonight, though not a big franchise. Best time of year for a Friday the 13th, I remember back in 2000 there was a Friday the 13th in October and it was a full moon. I remember evil clowns on zip lines but not much else.

Halloween to me growing up was always going to the theater and watching the 'SAW' movies and 'Paranormal Activity' movies - they get bashed but I love em - good cheap popcorn fluff

Honestly I've never been big into horror. Too much victim mentality on display. I know that's the fun of it all, I just get annoyed watching people make terrible decisions and sh!tting themselves under pressure.

Yeah, I don't get how they missed this opportunity. Or why at the very least you didn't get a rerelease or something of one of the classics. Or why did Warners not give their horror mega success, It, another push for this weekend?
It's also strange to me that Pixar has this new day-of-the-dead themed movie coming out, and it won't be in theaters until weeks later. Strange.
The vast majority of horror movies are, indeed, terrible, but often those movies can be a great deal of fun, and those are the easiest to watch for me. The kind of thing I can throw on and pay half attention to as I'm getting something else done. But a good, thoughtful horror story/movie is a rarity that I relish.
...anyway, you 'grew up' with Paranormal Activity? What are you like 3 years old?

There is "Happy Death Day" opening today - Groundhog Day remade as a slasher movie, apparently.

That movie looks so god damn stupid. Relatively decent reviews so far though.

What's your favorite horror flick, treefrogs? I plan to watch The Shining again for Halloween - it's a masterpiece. Saw Insidious last night. Some nifty craftwork but mostly shallow scares in my view.

Have you seen it?

I suggest you add The Black Cat (1934) my personal favorite Universal horror movie. If you haven't seen it, which you probably have, give it a watch soon.

There are tons of solid horror options on Netflix right now. Lots of indie flicks from all horror sub genres. I'm in the pro-Shining crowd. You can't ask for better cinematography or mounting dread.

A, perhaps, little seen but fun and unnerving Halloween movie is Satan's Little Helper. Weird little movie, with a weird tone, but rather enjoyable.
Sleepy Hollow and the Disney short The Legend of Sleepy Hollow are Halloween signifiers to me. Each is a must watch every year. I also read the short story each October.
The Black Cat is great. Whenever you get a few of these horror icons in one movie it's pretty great. The Hammer movies did a good job of that.

There's some hidden gems on there. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, Son of Frankenstein....great stuff

Yes I'd say The Shining is strictly the "best" horror movie I've ever seen. Love it. My all-time favorite though is probably the original Japanese Ringu.

I've seen Satan's Little Helper once several years ago and it is sort of goofy but twisted. It's a pretty sick movie considering a little kid is one of the main characters. I liked it. The Black Cat is the best of the Lugosi/Karloff pairings IMO. I love the horror mashups too. Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man. House of Dracula. All of the Karloff/Lugosi/Price/Cushing/Lee/Lorre combinations are entertaining.
