Sleepaway Camp - It's a really, really bad movie in typical 80s slasher fashion, trying to be funny and scary and never really succeeding at either. I watched it on Youtube and even though I was warned about the 'shocking' ending it didn't really prepare me enough.
The Mist is a great choice because it was a quality horror movie with a truly shocking ending that, at that moment, divided the audience.
Planet of the Apes 68 - I am sure many people realized early on that they were on Earth all along but even with that knowledge the image of the sinking, rusted Statue of Liberty at the end, and Heston's reaction, was incredibly shocking.

Planet of the Apes 68
The Empire Strikes Back-didnt expect them to leave Han Solo frozen for 3 years.
Asylum (1972) the surprise of who Dr. Starr was.

The Mist. It made the movie. There was an older movie I saw years ago about spiders taking over a town. I barely remember the movie, but I still remember the final shot of the townspeople stuck inside as it pans outside to show the entire town covered in webs.

The other movie you're thinking of is Kingdom Of The Spiders (1977) with William Shatner. Yeah that ending was very chilling.
