How do you like your Moscow Mule best? Which vodka do you think goes best with it? Everybody here drinks Absolute Vodka. I am not really sure about Absolute Vodka. It has a name for whatever reasons. I had one served me the other day with Grey Goose vodka. I didn't like it. The vodka was too sharp, although it's an expensive vodka. Another time it was Smirnoff vodka (didn't like it either) AND they had forgotten the mint. What do you suggest as good variations? Some swear on basil instead of mint, but I haven't tried. Any suggestions?

Funny thing is that most vodkas and gins are made by one company and distributed to the companies for labeling.

I've never had a Moscow Mule, but I'm intrigued by it, because of the (fairly sudden) popularity of the copper mugs that are appearing on store shelves ... from large to mini sizes.
In the next couple of days, I'm going to pick up some things at "Bevmo," and I'll ask for their thoughts. The last vodka that I bought was lemon flavored, after someone introduced me to the "lemon drop" martini. But, a flavor probably wouldn't work.
A substitute herb sounds interesting. But, I'd want to try the mint, before branching out. I do love rosemary ... hmm.

I have been told by two people by now that Tito's is the best vodka.

I like using Tito's simply because it's cheaper but still a good option. When you're mixing vodka with such dominant flavors as lime juice and ginger beer, I defy you to distinguish what type of vodka is in the drink. If you're drinking it straight, sure, but with those ingredients, it shouldn't matter too much - the types of ginger beer you use will affect the flavor more than anything else. Obviously, you don't want to drink swill but Tito's a perfect option.
As for your garnish, you can go with mint (my personal garnish of choice for this drink) but you can go with basil or cucumber too. Anything that gives it that extra burst of freshness will work.

I put both cucumber and mint inside. I tried it with Tito's vodka. Was sort of OKish. I don't like sharp taste in vodka.

I wouldn't say it's the "best" by any stretch of the imagination but it's pretty solid for what it costs. I go up to Mount Stowe in northern Vermont once a year or so and I always stop by Smuggler's Notch Distillery when I'm up there. They make my favorite vodka. I'm more of a whiskey guy who is just venturing into the world of tequila, but this vodka is terrific. It's smooth and is perfect on the rocks with just a splash of a fresh lime squeeze.
