Banned not because of Hayward. It should be banned because what it is is against the rules. It is offensive goaltending. 99% of successful ally-oops are offensive goaltending. They really are.

why is no one saying what a stupid pass/ play this is? really stupid. It truly is stupid a stupid pas/play: 1) you risk offensive goaltending. A pass above the rim and a player coming down and sending it home (a typical alley-oop) is the definition of offensive goaltending. 2) you obviously risk injury to the player receiving the pass. What do we know about football? A high pass over the middle to a receiver is thee most dangerous play in football. Just look up Darryl Stingley. A receiver is left high and dry, utterly defenseless. Well, that same disaster-waiting-to-happen pass is exactly the same as an alley-opp pass in basketball. Ban it because it is illegal. Ban it because it is severely dangerous. Ban it because asshole fans who love it are fans who clearly do not appreciate basketball. They are what I call "ESPN Sportcenter highlights" fans. "Wow, that is the bestest play I ever seen!"

You shouldn't ban it, especially because of one injury.
If people were routinely getting injured, then sure.

If people were routinely getting injured, then sure. i'm being slightly hyperbolic--but the celtics coach brad stevens should apologize to gordon for drawing up such a stupid play, and besides it being stupid in concept, he has the wrong player throw the hi-low pass, you always have a forward or center throw that pass---not a small guard! there's no angle for it to work.

The play just wasn't there. I don't think it matters who threw it up, it wasn't going to work with Lebron standing right under the rim.

The term "alley-oop" is derived from the French allez hop!, the yell of a circus acrobat about to leap.
The term "alley-oop" was first used in the 1950s by the San Francisco 49ers to describe a high arcing pass from Y. A. Tittle to wide receiver R.C. Owens, who would outleap smaller cornerbacks for touchdown receptions. It later became more well known for its use in basketball.

You shouldn't ban it, especially because of one injury. Well, the NFL banned defenders on the ground from trying to sack the QB because their Golden Boy Brady got injured and missed the 2008 season.

after the hayward injury it wouldn't be a bad idea... Just out of interest, because I don't follow the NBA, but how frequent are injuries as bad as this, just in general? Seen a few bone breaks in recent years. Paul George - one of the league's top players - went down recently from a broken leg while landing. And there was a college kid on Easter Sunday during the NCAA Tournament that made everyone lose their lunch when he came down and shattered his leg gruesomely. It is not common, but it certainly isn't rare or considered odd anymore. More common are the torn ACLs in the knee. See that constantly. In fact, I saw one just a few minutes ago. It looks like Jeremy Lin might have just done that. Those injuries cripple someone on every team just about every season. MVP Derrick Rose had it happen to him twice! Also seeing a rise in torn shoulders. Guys get hung up on each other and the shoulder gets ripped apart. Joakim Noah, Kevin Love...two big names that went through that recently. The injuries in the NBA are becoming far more serious in recent years. Bigger, faster, stronger players. Old days was muscle pulls for everybody. Now its tears and rips and shattered bones. Season ending stuff. Every team will get hit with at least one. Hell, the 76ers get hit with about five a year.
