Some drunk (or stoned) guy just decided to cross a very busy stretch of Highway 99 in N. Seattle yesterday as I was driving southbound going about 35 mph in a pickup truck. I didn't see the guy at first, because up ahead of me in the right-hand lane, a car had suddenly stopped on account of this guy walking into the lane. The car blocked my view of the guy, so I didn't see him stepping into traffic. But then he suddenly popped out from this stopped car and was just about to step into my lane as I went cruising on by.
I missed him by about a foot. Scared me pretty good. I'm pretty sure that if I had hit him, it would've been a fatality accident. A real mess. I made a note to myself to be more observant in the future.
I don't think I would've been found in the wrong if I had hit him: after all, he was attempting to cross right in the middle of traffic, NOT at an intersection or designated crosswalk. Still, it's not the kind of accident you want to have, even if you feel you're in the right and didn't cause it.
So yeah, I'm really breathing a sigh of relief for both me and that dude. Hope he gets help.
Any of you ever have a close call like that?

No, but you and he both lucked-out. Glad nothing bad happened.

Worst that happened was me almost getting t-boned by a pickup. That was five years ago. Then I nearly hit a Prius during a storm last summer.

My instructor said I drove like a cop. Then I replied, "Yeah my dad's a cop".

Years ago, Catman was driving on the interstate and a tuxedo cat leapt out in front of the car. Catman got off at the next exit and found blood and fur on the bumper.

I still miss the little feller.

I missed him, but the lady driving a few car lengths behind me might have clipped him.

I don't drive which may be a problem to some people but I have nearly run over people who have come running out of houses on my bicycle and my Malshis came very close to being hit by a car a few weeks ago by a driver who was texting while he was driving and not watching the rode that came out of nowhere when I was taking them for a walk.

The important thing is that if you did hit someone in a situation like this, don't run. Don't abandon your car and run away, don't drive away, etc. They'll find you (especially if you abandon your car), and even if the accident were your fault, you're going to be in much more serious trouble if it's a hit and run. See if you can help the person you hit, and then call 911. The situation you're describing sounds like it definitely wouldn't have been considered your fault at all.
I've had some close situations like this, but far more often when I'm on my bicycle. That's exacerbated by the fact that pedestrians don't look at bicycles nearly the same as they look at cars. They tend to think of bicycles as "just another person walking" if they even bother with that. Often they just completely ignore you and move out into a street--"There are no cars coming" and the bicycle doesn't seem to register with them at all. So they'll make stupid moves where I've got to have quick reflexes not to hit them. They're not realizing that a 220-230-pound guy is moving up to 20mph or more at towards them on a bicycle. And of course, unlike if I were in a car, it's dangerous for me, too, if I'd run into someone.
On the other side, cars are just as much a danger to me as they are for pedestrians, and some car drivers don't seem to register or care about bicycles very well, either.

So one morning I was driving to work and approaching an intersection with a green light, so obviously I have the right of way. But then this pedestrian from the other side all of a sudden just darts across the street; I came so close to hitting her. Just missed her by a few feet, probably. The reason she did this was because she was trying to catch a bus. I remember seeing the bus at the bus stop on the right-hand side and the woman was on the left-hand side. I can tell she antsy and was in a hurry to get to the bus. But it sure as hell wasn't worth risking her life over that!

Sometimes it is not about risking your life but momentarily forgetting you are crossing a busy street. Perhaps all that was in her mind was catching that bus.

She said"I saw you coming and ran anyway?" Just because she looked in your direction, does not mean her brain registered you being there.

Thing is you don't know why she needed to catch that bus, could be a situation where not catching it could have been something she couldn't risk, and she may have been right, you never know.

I really hope this is true, last week my ex next door neighbour got run over outside her house crossing a 2 lane road coming back from work, guy hasn't been caught yet and the whole thing turned my stomach.

Years ago, Catman was driving on the interstate and a tuxedo cat leapt out in front of the car. Catman got off at the next exit and found blood and fur on the bumper. One night Chalk was driving on a 2 lane but narrow and bendy road. The bends are consecutive and sharp, right, left, right. At high speed a young man on a motorcycle came around the bend, cutting the corner, and was completely over on my nearside. All I could do was slam brakes and duck, as I clearly expected him to hit and sail through my windshield. By some miracle he had been able to swerve back to his side and make the bend, never stopping. I say miracle cause I don't know how he made it. Swerving away took him opposite the direction of the bend and as I said these were sharp and the road narrow but after swerving he was somehow still able to turn back into, and make the bend. If he was a cat I'd say he used up all 9 lives although had Catman been the driver of my car, the man would likely be toast.

I missed hitting a deer just by inches near Grandfather Mtn in North Carolina on Rt 221--curvy roads everywhere, and just before dawn he was right there I had a similar experience on the road once... only difference is, I was on a motorcycle! The thing went bounding across the road right in front of me. It happened so fast I didn't have time to react. Luckily I missed colliding with the beast. It was around dusk, too, so I didn't really see exactly whether it was a deer or an elk. But, whatever it was, it was a full-grown animal. Meaning, if I had hit it, going at the speed I was on my motorcycle, I'd probably have been toast.
