2004 is the year when 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' won Best Picture Oscar. It was nominated along with these films: -Lost in Translation -Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World -Mystic River -Seabiscuit
Do you think one of these 4 should've won Best Picture instead of 'The Return of the King'? Why or why not?

I was never much of a sci-fi or fantasy reader but a good friend who was a high school reading teacher forced “The Fellowship of the Ring” on me and I felt like I had to read it out of an obligation. I ended up blowing through all three volumes of LOTR like it was a 100-page Encyclopedia Brown collection. I have read it many times since. I have even read the entire saga out loud – twice: once to each of my kids. I was nervous about the Jackson adaptation but, in spite of some missteps, I was heartened by the film of “Fellowship.” That good feeling started to leave me right at the beginning of “The Two Towers” film and was completely gone at the half-way point with the dwarf tossing. From that point on, the film series continued on its downward trend, leaving me depressed by the final fade-out. “Return Of The King” is but a standard, CGI heavy, loud, noisy, nerve wracking summer “blockbuster” movie like so many others. The lack of creativity, innovation, or intelligence is astounding.
“Master and Commander” is yet another terrible movie that should never have come within a parsec of an Oscar nomination. It featured some of the worst, most amateurish acting I have ever seen in a major motion picture.
“Seabiscuit” was also very annoying. Another Based On A True Story sports movie about an underdog who goes on to win the championship except “Seabiscuit” gives us two – count ‘em – two slow-motion climactic stake-all races, about 40 minutes apart. With both of them, as the title race horse rounds the final turn and passes the lead horse, the film goes to slo-mo while the orchestra plays a triumphant serenade like John Williams might have written on a really bad day. How can people fall for such obvious, cynical, cliched manipulation. “Seabiscuit” should have been laughed off the screen.
So that leaves “Lost In Translation” and “Mystic River from the nominees. Of the two, I will have to go with “Mystic River.” LIT never cast the magic over me that it did for a lot of people – a good movie, nevertheless and I was glad that it got a Best Picture nom.

Actually I think The Last Samurai was better than all of them.

Actually I think The Last Samurai was better than all of them. I believe it was a different eligibility actually. As for the best picture win I also would choose something else.

Nice that you read the books to your kids Mike, my brother-in-law read all the Harry Potter's to his son, and now his son is an avid reader, good going.

I haven't seen Seabiscuit. Mystic River and Lost in Translation are good films, but RotK is better. That goes double for Master and Commander.
RotK isn't even my favorite of the trilogy (that's TTT), but I can't think of anything else that year that was better. The right film won, I'd say.

Yeah, I've seen many people picking 'The Fellowship of the Ring' or 'The Return of the King' as his/her favorite film in the trilogy, but I rarely see people who would pick 'The Two Towers'...

Yes, or at least the extended edition is. I feel it's the darkest and most character driven, with the best battle sequence in Helm's Deep. I also enjoy the pacing more. Fellowship takes awhile to get going, and King of course takes awhile to end, while Towers as a middle point is always moving. It also helps that Gollum is one of my all time favorite characters (let alone favorite LOTR characters), and this is essentially his movie.

What did you like better about Helm's Deep compared to Pelennor Fields? 2. Let me guess. 'Gollum's Song' is your favorite ending song from Middle-earth saga?

My favorite of that year was House of Sand and Fog but of the nominees I liked Lost in Translation the most, then Mystic River and Lord of the Rings, other two didn't interest me.

I don't like the LOTR movies but I haven't got a problem with it beating those other candidates.

As it's one of my favorite movies, if not my favorite movie, I have no problem with it at all. It's imo one of the best things the Oscars have done, finally rewarding mainstream fantasy as a force to be reckoned with.
