If the spoilers are true, then looks like they are combining the old and new gods and everything and there will be a big flashback. Obviously the flashback is set before Wonder Woman because they did say that Ares killed Zeus. I feel like Darkseid should be somewhere in this invasion though.

There's a fan theory speculating that the Greek Gods actually aren't dead in the DCEU but Hippolyta tells WW otherwise because the truth is more nefarious.

Someone needs to get Kratos in there, he'd sort all them Gods out no problem.

If they weren't just going to go with Darkseid himself, then I wonder why they went with Steppenwolf, instead of say Kalibak, son of Darkseid? Steppenwolf has always been a supporting New God, not one of the leads.

Or they thought the name 'Steppenwolf' sounded cooler.

Kalibak has never been written as very smart in the comics. Rash and brutishly dumb, and that goes double for all of his animated appearances. Steppenwolf has always been a brilliant military strategist as well as cruel. One of Darkseid's generals.

to Atomicfrog,
its true that Kalibak is dumb and Steppenwolf is a military strategist, but they've could've made changes to beef up Kalibak. They've already made changes to beef up Steppenwolf: he doesn't look like this in the comics and isn't anywhere near as mighty. He's literally a guy in a military-esque costume who shouts commands.
And since they're going with CGI for this villain I imagine that Kalibak could have been this huge monstrous Hulk-like character with a massive club like he's depicted in the comics. Don't get me wrong, I like what they've done with Steppenwolf and I'm excited to see the movie, I'm just curious as to why Steppenwolf and why not just go with Darkseid, himself in anything...
