Sidney Lumet - 12 Angry Men If you want to be picky and consider his TV work, I would say Charles Laughton - The Night of the Hunter. I'd agree on "12 Angry Men" (though my favorite is 'Network') and I liked "The Night of the Hunter" --- do you know why he only directed one?

He died a couple of years later, and the film wasn't successful critically or box-office-wise on release. Maybe he didn't have time or just wasn't incentivised. He was one of the most successful actors at the time (rightfully so, if you ask me); it wasn't like he intended to have a directing career and gave up after his first feature.
