I really like it, except it feels too safe, like we know the ending will be nicely tidied up.
Excellent ensemble though... a who's who... Depp Ricci Walken Gambon Richardson Jones Griffiths McDiarmid Gough Lee Landau
B+ 7/10

It is a very fun and well made movie. I would rate it higher than the 7 I'm giving it except as twothousandonemark pointed out, it feels too safe.

An 8. Very entertaining. Depp's comic timing was just excellent and the cinematography was brilliant too.

I kinda fluctuate on my score for this film but I watched it last week and I really do love the atmosphere and look and the way Burton brought Sleepy Hollow alive. Depp is really superb as Ichabod Crane. I give it a 9/10.

7/10.
Because I like the Headless Horseman story and also because Burton saw a place to stick Christopher Lee and Michael Gough.
I like Depp's effort to emulate Roddy McDowall too though he says at the beginning "we are almost at the millennium." What? in 1791?
The troubles I have with it is that the Horseman is too physical--they throw him around during the carriage chase. Is he a supernatural creature or a stunt man?
Story-wise it has the baggage of the studio ideology so Crane is saddled with neurosis due to his father.
This film has a lot in common with Hammer's 1959 Hound of the Baskervilles. Both involve scheming peasants who seek to reclaim their land using a supernatural agent and it takes an outsider to deal with the problem. Main thematic difference is that in the Hammer film the peasant evildoers are in fact deposed and deformed aristocratic foreigners who hate England and the end has the good aristocrat restored to his position as protector of the town.
In SH, the evildoers are not aristocrats from what I can gather--two blonde girls/witches---they looked poor to me. No sympathy is generated for them-one is a blank and the other is wicked even as a child. The town itself is a throwaway--what happens to the town after all those men are dead? Who knows? Crane takes the daughter of the head honcho and they head for the big city.

I went to see this in cinema and was very disappointed. Burton sugarcoated the story too much and I found Depp's character really annoying. Burton's humor often doesn't work for me and this was one of those cases. I would have preferred the whole thing to be more serious and, well, "supernatural", without cheap gore and far too "psychical" headless horseman. 5/10
However I have been thinking of giving this a second chance. Burton's movies always have interesting visual designs at least and supporting cast has some interesting names.

I dont think I liked it much when I saw in a cinema but it grew on me after a few years. Same with his Batman movies.
I liked that they threw in some sound effects from the Disney cartoon and his horse is named Gunpowder.

Just watched it for the first time. It has a whole host of issues -too much gratutious gore, odd pacing, convoluted plot, and weird dark humor- but it's just so gorgeously gothic and fun to watch.
