Supernatural. The idea of going up against something that is alien to real life is more satisfyingly spooky. Being scared by someone who may break into your home is a given, but being scared by something unreal is more of a challenge to do well.

Definitely supernatural Horror movies. I don't mind some realistic ones but I prefer the supernatural elements in the Horror genre and it is for that reason 'Friday the 13th 6' is my favourite out of all the 'Friday the 13th' movies and I loved 'Friday the 13th' 7 and 8. When Jason came back again with powers he was far more scary.

It depends on how well it is done. Supernatural films can give you some great scares. I thought The Conjuring 2-16', was one of the best to come out in a while. Realistic ones, have to play their cards right, with the atmosphere, characterizations, horror elements and violence. They don't necessarily have to be scary, but suspenseful and even with a touch of sadism if done right. I love HOUSE OF WAX, the HOSTEL films, and the remakes of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. The best realistic ones came out in the 70's and early 80's, like TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE-74', THE HILLS HAVE EYES-77', HALLOWEEN-78', MANIAC-80', THE FUNHOUSE-81', BASKET CASE-82'.

Supernatural/fantastical
I generally like fantastical everything better, not just horror.
Not that I don't like any realistic (or "realistic") fiction, but I do hate when I consider the realism fetish, a normative expectation that (at least some) fictions should be realistic. If I were to just want reality, I'd not bother with fiction. I like fiction because I want to see what people can imagine. Show me your fantasies--how creative or imaginative can you be?

Well, the more realistic a horror film is, the scarier it is, and the harder it is to distance yourself from it. I guess I prefer the "escapist" quality of supernatural, and otherwise more outré, horror.

Supernatural usually, but some of my all-time favourites are of the more realistic sort, i.e. Wolf Creek, Alien (if one counts aliens as 'realistic')

Well, the more realistic a horror film is, the scarier it is. In some ways, I feel the opposite. A human antagonist is someone I can potentially outwit or put a physical barrier between us. But a supernatural presence is something that I don't know the limits of. I can't anticipate moves or ever feel safe. That seems scarier to me. Of course, it really just depends on how good the film is. Both have the potential to be very scary.
