I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding, and even the most rudimentary sense of good or evil, life or death, right or wrong. I met this six year old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face. And the blackest eyes. The Devils' eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up, because I realized that what was living behind that boys' eyes was purely and simply...Evil.

Okay, I'll stick it out with you for the rest of the night. But if you're right about this then damn you for letting him go!

I've read some complaints about Loomis' dialogues being overwritten but personally I've always bought them 100%. Dr. Loomis and Snake Plissken had the best lines in Carpenter's filmography.
Also, I think that
is one of the most chilling statements ever delivered by a fictional character.

ReynardI'm afraid I'm one of the complainers, but (in my case) it's not so much that I think the lines are overwritten (they have to be, more or less, for the character) as it is that I think Pleasance overacts wildly. I rewatched Halloween the other night with a few friends, and we had a ball riffing on it (especially the Pleasance parts--"hey, Doc, you gonna stay in that house all night? Ever considered that he might be somewhere else?" "Yeah, because otherwise we wouldn't have a plot"), but it's still one effective little rollercoaster of a movie.

He does, in a way, and not only in Halloween but in many films throughout his career. It's just a quetion of taste, like with Jack Nicholson in The Shining, Bette Davis in Burnt Offerings or Klaus Kinski in just about every role. Different people "buy" very different stylistic choices. I don't think Pleasence was a bit unaware of how he was playing the role though. That's just me though. I have a lot of love for eccentric characters.

You haven't anything to worry about. He hasn't spoken a word in fifteen years.
........ok, maybe a little longer.
