"The Penalty", with Lon Chaney Sr. I think its year of release was 1920.

strictly by the topics definition (i.e. OWN ON DVD(with no exceptions to this wording))... A Fistful of Dollars (1964). but just going by oldest movie of any real worth for me that i have... The Song of Bernadette (1943)(7/10). but oldest movie i like to a really high degree(say 9 or higher)... The Hustler (1961)(9/10). but any movies i consider favorites i have a proper "copy" of so i can watch them whenever i want to which is my 7 and higher rated movies which comes out to 199 movies. but i still have a large enough portion of movies i scored a 6/10 also (i got all of my 6-6.5/10 rated movies for sure). TheFilmologistback then barely anyone had DVD players because they just cost too much (if i recall correctly i think i remember seeing one commercial for a DVD player back in the late 1990's and it was something like $700) as it was into the 2000's before they started to get more affordable for the average person basically. but nowadays, as you already know, they are a dime-a-dozen and just about everyone has had one for many years now. funny how technology advances like that. makes me wonder if bluray will ever be a household product like DVD but i suspect not because it seems a lot of people prefer streaming but i never liked that personally. also, i think i read online it was around 2003 when DVD rentals overtook VHS (so this is probably a rough indication of DVD format being mainstream popularity). i think we got our first DVD player around 2002 or so (i am pretty sure it was no earlier than 2000 but i am thinking it's either 2002-2003. if i could recall the model of our DVD player i could probably find a ball park figure on when we got it.).
