One of the best production design in a film. Great visual effects, and Jessica Chastain was absolutely perfect. One of my favorites horror movies of the year!

It's a beautiful looking tribute to that style of horror movies from back in the day. The script though wasn't up to the same level; Hiddleston and Chastain were fine but the girl was miscast. But it's still entertaining. 6/10.

I'm--not quite sure what to make of it. If I had to write something, it would probably be similar to what politicidal wrote: it looks beautiful--the direction, cinematography, and art-direction are stellar--but the script is sorely lacking, and it has one of the most anticlimactic "twists" I've ever seen. Also: did anyone else observe that the ghosts are more or less irrelevant to the main plot? (Not sure whether or not to put that in spoilers, but better safe than sorry.) I also agree that, while Hiddleston and Chastain were fine (the acting was hammy all-round, but it fits the Corman-esque style), Wasikowska was miscast. It's not terrible, but I forgot about most of it soon after seeing it--except for one scene, that gorgeous opening sequence with the mother's ghost. To be perfectly honest, I remembered not only because it was so well-done but also because I remember a "night terror" when I was very young that was similar. The scene worked at tapping into that memory, making the scene rather personal for me as well--but, of course, that wasn't the intention or what most people will see in the scene.

Just makes you wonder how a woman as soft and smooth as Jessica there can be called "Sharpe" in the film.

Have you seen Mario Bava's Black Sabbath (1963)? Because the ghost scenes at the beginning were definitely a tribute to that film's last and best story, "The Drop of Water".

Reynard I have not in fact seen Black Sabbath (or much of Bava's work, unfortunately; I started to rectify that by watching La ragazza che sapeva troppo a few days ago), but I know of that sequence. Thanks for letting me know that was the inspiration! EDIT: I should note that I also saw Black Sunday many years ago; I really should look more into Bava's oeuvre...

Crimson Peak is certainly beautifully filmed, but it's a meandering, ultimately boring and dissatisfying film.

The ghost in a Drop of Water is a rather obvious dummy or a woman wearing a horrific mask. The ghosts in Crimson Peak are all CGI. I fail to see any connection.

Crimson Peak is certainly beautifully filmed, but it's a meandering, ultimately boring and dissatisfying film. Sadly I have to agree with that, especially about meandering. Guillermo del Toro's career is very frustrating. He's obviously both inspired and talented, yet his filmography, also as a producer, has much more misses than hits. Something I found distracting in Crimson Peak is how del Toro recycled ideas and even entire scenes from The Devil's Backbone.

I did not mean how the ghost is made, but how the first ghost moves, slowly sliding forward, with hands ready for some kind of grotesque embrace, and colored gel lights with one wall red and the opposite green.

What does everybody else here think of this Movie ? Good grief, anthony. What's the point of bumping the third thread of page one? It wasn't exactly on well its way to oblivion now was it?

A great looking film and worth a rental for that alone. But it has nothing else going for it.
