I read a critic's review of Crimson Peak and they described it as "beautifully underwhelming". That is exactly how I feel about it.
The sets, costumes and visuals are all great, but the characters are bland and the story's been done before in several other (and much better) horror films. Chastain is entertaining however.
It's a shame as I love most of Del Toro's other films but his last two (Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak) have left me cold. Here's hoping his upcoming The Shape of Water is a return to form.

Have you seen Mario Bava's Black Sabbath (1963)? Because the ghost scenes at the beginning were definitely a tribute to that film's last and best story, "The Drop of Water". The ghost in a Drop of Water is a rather obvious dummy or a woman wearing a horrific mask. The ghosts in Crimson Peak are all CGI. I fail to see any connection. Actually the ghosts in Crimson Peak weren't CGI, we were just fooled into thinking they were. They were real actors enhanced by CGI. I was quite impressed by that aspect myself. Good film too. Good performances, & I enjoyed the melodramatic gothic feel as well.

The Shape of Water is possibly his best film. If you loved his other films, then I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I just saw this film for the first time tonight. It was on demand for free, so I checked it out. It was pretty good IMO.

I like the film. The atmosphere and the scenery sort of reminded me of Bram Stoker's Dracula for some reason. Well done. Tom Hiddleston would have been a better Harker than Keanu.
