I wasn't looking at news and I didn't even know the Marlins released him until I saw this thread.
As a Marlins fan, I've been kind of afraid to look at news this off-season.

They can offer him a minor league contract and see how he looks in spring training. You can do a lot worse for a 5th outfielder.

Might as well. Have him retire a Mariner.

No, he doesnt have "it" anymore. ZolotoyRetriever the article...hit it on the head. No x100. The misconception is that the Mariners would be signing Ichiro to be their everyday leadoff man and starting RF or that they'd have to spend $2m to get him. I get that article's talk of his offensive decline, but given that (i) they won't be paying him $2m, which that article seems to proclaim as set in stone (it's not, he'll get a minor league contract unless someone offers something more), and (ii) if you think of the other dregs around the league that can fill the role of 5th outfielders, it's not the worst idea in the world. Give him a minor league deal and invite him to ST. If he is old and shits the bed, you're out nothing. If he shows he has a bit more gas left in the tank, you're paying him a near-league-minimum salary and giving the fans a little something extra to cheer for. That's a win-win. Or they can sign the atrocious Alejandro de Aza to fill that same spot in the order for basically the same amount of money. Or Kirk Neuwenheis. I'll take Ichiro 10 times out of 10 in that spot.

Sodomojo has always been a hack blog that prays to the cult of Sabermetrics. No one is saying they sign him as a starter. The Mariners currently have a grand total of 3 OF on their roster. Gamel, Heredia and Haniger. Sign Ichiro as a 4th/5th OF/PH. Sign him right now. His presence can help persuade Otani/Darvish to come to Seattle. He can retire as a Mariner, and if some good luck finally breaks the team's way, be part of their playoff team.

I remember when the Seattle Seahawks signed Franco Harris, back in about 1984, after Harris had been let go from the Steelers. I remember people being really excited about that. But it went nowhere. The guy was really washed up by then.
