Finally... I hope he makes some great films. It's an insanely ambitious thing he's attempting, but I hope he succeeds. The more quality films we have, the better.

The topic title alone fills me with physical pain.

The topic title alone fills me with physical pain. I know what you mean. The first film was a bit of a slog; I had most decidedly had more than enough when it ended, and the thought of four more makes me feel weary. There's also a chance that it will take so long for the fifth to be released that by then real-world technology will have caught up with the first.

Probably will be well marketed and make a ton of money, but I don't think the first movie has much relevance in pop culture. And releasing them in December against Star Wars might be a mistake

And releasing them in December against Star Wars might be a mistake Maybe, maybe not. Having two huge hitters in December could be an effective way of driving away all other potential competition (one movie alone might encourage counter-programming). And maybe there's something like the Efficient Market Hypothesis operating here: it might be that distributors are so cleverly shuffling their schedules every bit of real estate is equally crowded, relative to what the market can bear at that time of year, that December is no worse than any other time. With Avatar, I can't conceive how there could possibly be a big market for more of this stuff - but then I could have sworn (and others could have sworn too) that after each Transformers movie, that would be it: the next one was sure to flop.

Yeah, but with Avatar and SW in the same month they'll each take a chunk of the other's box office

In other words, Cameron is intentionally sabotaging Star Wars.

What is his obsession with Avatar nonsense? He could have forayed into other potentially great stories of various genres.

Loved the first one and am a huge Cameron fan but I really wish he went on to do Battle Angel instead. Hope its not a total disaster handing it over to Rodriguez. Anyway, I've got faith in Cameron for the sequels.

I have faith in James Cameron.
I thought the first "Avatar" was going to be a flop when I saw the first trailer. Now I feel like a shave-tail Louie.
But seriously, I LOVED the hell out of the original. I also saw it in IMAX 3D and it wasn't just a film, it was an experience. Now that I rewatch it on Blu-Ray, it doesn't even 'feel' like the same film.
So the reason these films will succeed is because they will be visual spectacles for your eyes to feast on. I think he should have just made a trilogy. I guess he wants to make the next "Star Wars" before he dies so he has a legacy to leave behind? IDK.

Just wanted to say I'm not a big fan of the first film, but I enjoyed it. I look at the sequels as an opportunity to take an engaging sci-fi world and do interesting things with it. It's a bit of a blank slate. That's why I'm looking forward to it.
People say Cameron should be trusted because he knows how to do sequels, but I don't know that he does; I think he merely tries to make good films and mostly succeeds, sequels or not. So I want to see what he does with his Avatar films because he has a solid track record, even if not every film is a home run.

I like the Avatar world and he clearly has stories to tell. I thought the first one was visually spectacular and I'm excited to see what innovated special effects he's going to come up with.

I'll believe it exists only when I see casting announcements. I bet Jai Courtney will have a part in it.

Did any of you know that many years ago, James Cameron was actually going to write a Script for "ALIEN 5" and Ridley Scott was going to Direct it but it didn't happen because the Studio decided to do "AVP: ALIEN vs. PREDATOR" instead.

Well good luck, but I don't know exactly what the plan for long standing appeal is. Star Wars has fantastic characters and epic storylines. Avatar, as great as the visuals might be...you can't remember or care much about any of its characters. The emotional connection is not there at all. I mean I'm sure the movies will still be watchable, in a "wow this alien water world is very cool" kind of sci-fi Natural Geographic way, but I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if it achieves something more than that.

At least the Avatars won't be remakes or reboots.
