Rian Johnson will write/direct the first film. These new films will have nothing to do with Luke or any characters associated with him. We'll likely start to see these films after Episode 9. What do you think about a new trilogy of Star Wars films? Do you think these films have creative possibilities or may just rehash stuff? Is there a risk of oversaturation with these new films just like there is with the spinoffs? Should the franchise take a long break after Episode 9 before even attempting more films? www.yahoo.com/news/brand-apos-star-wars-apos-220530350.html

Well A, this pretty much confirms that TLJ is a great film. And B, I can't wait for this trilogy. Johnson being the ambitious writer/director he is and this trilogy having no ties to characters of the franchise should be the perfect opportunity to get a fresh, and original story.

A break isn't needed, possibly there'll need to be one in the future, but for now it'll be good for the next 20 years or so.

There's always a danger of killing the golden goose. The most important factor is quality control, something that was missing with TFA.

I think its a great idea to make a trilogy focusing on new characters and storyline. And thats something lot of peoples have been asking for ever since Disney bought Star Wars.

Let's take a head count on what we have so far (as well as what we're still getting and/or possibly getting) since Disney purchased Star Wars
Films:
The Force Awakens Last Jedi Rogue One Episode 9 New trilogy Solo: A Star Wars Story spinoff Possible Obi-wan spinoff Possible Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB-8 spinoffs
TV:
Star Wars: Forces of Destiny New live action TV show for Disney's streaming service www.ign.com/articles/2017/11/09/star-wars-tv-series-announced-for-disney-streaming-service
So from 2015 extending through at least the next 10 years, this is all the Star Wars stuff we have gotten/will be getting. Don't you think this may be a little too much Star Wars?

Normally with new trilogies I always try to keep expectations in check, but this news makes me very excited. I agree with salomonj , this pretty much confirms that The Last Jedi will be amazing (at least in their eyes) or they would never give Johnson another movie. It'll also be the first time since the original & prequel trilogy that a director in the Star Wars universe will be able to think of something completely original that isn't tied to the other movies. And that director being Rian Johnson, someone who already proved with Breaking Bad that he's one of the best directors right now, makes me very happy. I'd almost say I'm more excited for this trilogy that we know nothing about yet than for episode 9.

More excited than for ep8, where he had to work with the shitty characters already created
