...Manny's in Chicago is the cats meow...!!! I thought I read the LA area had a few deli places? Haven't traveled much on the west coast(except to San Francisco and Vegas), but yep different regions of the country will do better when it comes to serving certain types of food. Also, I thought I read some deli place had opened in Las Vegas, but can't remember which one it was that opened there.
As for the Chicago area, I also really like Kaufman's in Skokie a lot. Shorter trip for me to get to vs. Manny's, and to me it's about as good. The Bagel(with 2 locations, 1 at Old Orchard Shopping Center, and the other in Lakeview on Broadway south of Belmont) isn't bad, either. New York Bagel and Bialy in Lincolnwood is probably the best place I've found for bagels, and there are other places that carry their bagels in the Chicago area as well.
Hackney's on Harms IS the place to go...

When I lived in Los Angeles, people used to swear to me up and down that Jerry's Famous Deli was as good as anything you can find on the east coast when it comes to quality jewish deli. Those people are just wrong. Jerry's is a fine facsimile but it's not just the same. East coast jewish deli shits on west coast jewish deli. The sushi and mexican food, however, are second to none. Every time I'm on the west coast I go to town on that stuff. LOL The east coast is so much better when it comes to food I just moved to pennsylvania after spending 34 and 2/3rds of my life on the west coast

I've made my own before. Just need to find some good dark Russian rye bread for starters... Even better than dark Russian rye. Marble Rye.

Another deli song: The Ballad of Irving by Frank Gallop
Well, finally Irving got three slugs in the belly It was right outside the Frontier Deli He was sittin' there twirlin' his gun around And butterfingers Irving gunned himself down!

Don't know if you have any Arby's restaurants in your area but you might want to try their Reuben's. They serve them on marble bread.

Sure, the east coast has better pizza, bagels and overall deli fare in general, but the west coast blows us out of the water when it comes to sushi and mexican food. Save for a top spot in Manhattan (I'm becoming a huge fan of omakase places), your average sushi spot on the west coast is going to be hands down better than anything we have to offer on our side of the country.

...Manny's in Chicago is the cats meow...!!! Great place. The deli in my Hyde Park neighborhood was Morry's. Only so-so. I later learned it was managed by Suze Orman's father. Morry's sold seltzer bottles like the ones the Three Stooges sprayed each other with. And of course in Chicago, any soft drink is referred to as "pop".

Those sandwiches are so easy to make at home and usually are better. Why not just make one? Deli rye, good quality corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese. Grill both sides with butter on a flattop. We used to wrap them in Saran Wrap first and nuke them for 60 seconds before grilling them.
