I use to say the same thing. Then I grew up, joking but seriously I was watching a movie based on Judy Garland's life and it showed clips from Meet Me In St. Louis. I had songs from that movie stuck in my head for weeks. I broke down and decided to give Meet Me In St. Louis a try. I loved it! I then started watching other well known and loved musicals. The breaking out in song is simply a way to carry the story forward. I now own a number of musicals such as The Music Man & Hairspray which are two family favorites. Adding to what you said... There is a podcast called Scriptnotes hosted by screenwriters John August and Craig Mazin, and in it, they often equate songs in musicals to third-person narration in novels, that songs are a way of informing the viewer what a character is thinking.

I don't wish to offend the people that like this trash, but I call a spade a spade. I hate musicals because they are astoundingly stupid. It makes no sense that people just burst into song all the time and how multiple people all know the words to a song that they are supposed to be making up on the spot. I know musicals are not made by or designed for bright people. Folks that enjoy musicals and dumb airheads and hipsters with colourful jackets and cowboy boots. But just because this crap is designed for an audience of fucking imbeciles that doesn't mean it's okay to put zero thought into it. If you are going to make a musical, please make sure it's not moronic garbage for lowlife imbeciles. Thanks. I had the same problem with most musicals until I was about 19 and saw "Westside Story." I suddenly realized that most musicals were really a form of fantasy film, and required a willing suspension of disbelief. Up to that time I could more willingly accept those that were about putting on a show, where the songs were logical in the plotting.

It's like the old saying - " Art imitates life " . I so dig that ( and so want to believe it too ) . So for me that's where one of my first love of musicals came from as well .

Well look at it this way, instead of playing out a scene with dialogue, they use song and dance to get that point across. I love west side story! I love every song in that movie.

IMPO ( old school here of course ) - It also showed that a man can dance and still be macho too . I totally agree here jayhn1111 Westside Story definitely had some excellent singing and quality dance numbers as well .

Each one is great in their own way. West side story and grease are my two favorites. Though I prefer the broadway Grease soundtrack over the film. Is westside story your favorite?

Westside Story and Grease are definitely in my top 10 of favorite musicals ( we already know which # 1. favorite is mine here ) . Growing up musicals were always my first favorite of programs as well . It always seems to pick us up when we are feeling down too .

Who needs all that dark and gloomy stuff they push now in movies and tv shows. I'd rather watch Fred Astaire do some kickass dance numbers and then get the girl in the end

Way back when I was in high school, my friend said to me "musical logic is like my girlfriend, I don't have a girlfriend". I'm sure you can tell what that means: musicals don't have any logic

While many musicals don't adhere to reality (nor does any film or play), they do have a mode of understanding associated with them and the way they work.

I think, you need to look on the bright side, because you may love what you want to hide. The musical is the apple of your eye, no matter how much you may deny!
Chorus:
Your secret love, the musical is what you really want! Your secret love, the musical, in your heart does haunt! Why deny it? Why fight it? You know you can't run for long! There's nothing you like better than speaking through song!
Speaking through song!
