I posted this on the Health and Fitness board too but I think it has just as much place here.
Has anybody ever looked at all the different ways eating healthy is supposed to benefit you? Everything from fighting cancer to fighting diabetes and insulin resistance, to lowering cholesterol, easing muscle pains, fighting cataracts and macular degeneration, fighting kidney disease, it's amazing what all those fruits and vegetables we take for granted are capable of doing. And it's definitely more motivating to eat healthy when you know HOW they help your body, instead of when we were kids and just told that it WAS good for us, it's a whole other ball game when you learn WHY it's good for you and how it works, and so much of it is so easy, berries, cherries, citrus fruits, sweet potatoes, cabbage, spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beans, etc.

I do all that, and still have all those issues. Doesn't help to sit hours on hours.

I don't know why, but I am addicted to salad nowadays. And massive amounts of fruit. I have to eat two apples before I go to bed. I don't know what's up.

I'm working more legumes into my diet. I've always loved lentils, bean salads, legume laden soups ... but, they've become a focus, recently. Protein, fiber and staying hydrated. Wisdom comes with age, on so many fronts.

Diet tonic water alleviates leg cramps at night. Works wonders. Regular also works but there is sugar in regular.
Cutting down to one carb a day.
Knowing that an apple has 32 of those diet killers.
Knowing what my body can and can't handle. A health food might not be worth it if I end up on the toilet for hours wanting to die.

I try to be careful in between meals more than anything because that's where people really fuck up, particularly working in a large office as I do where there are always tons of cake, cookie and candy options. I snack on raw vegetables, almonds and fruit. This time of year, pomegranate is just coming into season and man oh man are those good and packed full of nutritional goodness.

...olives, carrots and artichokes for me... I love olives, it was only recently I found out they have actual nutrients in them, you look at the label on the can and there's nothing there in the way of that.

Good to know. Right now, I am addicted to salad, though. Maybe I should pull myself together and change my diet to red wine and dark chocolate.

Thanks. But it's that craving for them that concerns me.

I love vegetables. It's my main meal 5 days a week. The other two days, I eat what I want. But I really don't eat a huge amount. Vegetable-mainly spinach, because leafy greens are the best for you. Occasionally I try to incorporate cauliflower & lots of tomatoes. But tomatoes are not good year round(they get mealy). Carrots I don't usually have since they're high in sugar. Except a piece of my carrot cake .
