...you cannot go wrong with a wine with the appellation "Cote-Du-Rhone. Another one that will always satisfy is a Chianti Classico as long as there is the characteristic black rooster somewhere on the label which guarantees authenticity...

Nuts, you might like this one: Layer Cake California Cabernet Sauvignon. I just had a bottle very recently. It's a very good Cali Cab for the price - it was under $15 (I think it was $13.99 at the store I got it from).

Zolot, what kind of tasting notes are you getting? I've seen this wine on the shelves in my area but never picked it up. Does it actually taste like cake?

stickman38: lol NO, it doesn't taste like cake. That's just the label. They also put out Zinfandel, Malbec, Shiraz and maybe some others. But, they all have the Layer Cake label (and the picture of the cake on the front).
This Cab was very good, as far as sub-15 dollar Cali Cabs go. A bit "fruit forward" as they say (read: slightly sweet, but not overly so). Good tannins and medium/medium full body. Sure, there are more "heavy hitters" to be found amongst Cali Cabs, but you pay for them! This one's a very good bargain, IMO.
BTW, this one comes with a screw cap - i.e. not corked. So it's pretty convenient to take as a gift or bring to a dinner party.

Came across a really good cheap wine the other day.... Gallo Family Pinot Noir At $5-$6 for a four pack or bottle, it's hard to believe this is REALLY a Pinot Noir but after taste testing it, I gotta say "yeah, it's the real deal". www.gallofamily.com/wines/pinot-noir.php

Yep, I believe this is actually the first one I've tried from their lineup. After tasting this one, I am definitely going to try their Merlot and Cabernet Sav.
Are their whites any good?

I've never tried Gallo white wines. When it comes to white wine, I tend to go for the more expensive Pouilly Fuisse or Corton Charlemagne from France but these can be a burden on your pocketbook.
Another great white from France is Condrieu, wich is made from the scarce Voignier grape. And another expensive one but oh so very good.

I can't claim to be a connoisseur, but I could swear that wine is supposed to only ever be consumed in liquid form.
