Any of the top 7 are in if they win out (because many of them still have to play each other before all is said and done). Anyone after that needs to win out and get a lot of help.

They need a Sweet 16 - no debates would be necessary. It would be epic and a giant party for over a month. Per the AP Poll - here's the Top 16 right now: 1. 'Bama 2. 'Canes 3. Sooners 4. Clemson 5. Wisconsin 6. Auburn 7. Georgia 8. Ohio State 9. Notre Dame 10. Oklahoma State 11. TCU 12. USC 13. Penn State 14. UCF 15. Washington State 16. Washington Turkey Day Until Christmas you run a slate of games every week (March Madness style). Just look as these matchups. Imagine holiday shopping stopping for lunch/dinner at a Sports Bar and watching these - or even when you get home: First weekend: #1 'Bama vs. #16 Washington #2 Miami Vs. #15 Wash St. #3 Sooners Vs. #14 UCF #4 Clemson Vs #13 Penn State #5 Wisconsin Vs. #12 USC #6 Auburn vs. #11 TCU #7 Georgia Vs. #10 Okla State #8 Ohio State Vs. #9 Notre Dame And that's just the first weekend - all leading up to the National Championship on New Years Day

Love this idea, frogs. Of course you'd always have people bitching about teams on the outside looking in-- March Madness keeps expanding and people still complain about bubble teams that miss out-- but there's no question you're getting the best the country has to offer if you expand to 16. The FCS has a tournament, there's literally no reason the FBS can't have one too.

On a side note per the above.
Nobody cares about these side 'Bowl Games' anymore. The stadiums are half empty and they're meaningless if you're not in the playoff.
Players are even not playing now for fear of getting hurt and damaging their Pro Careers.
You do a format like a Sweet 16? It means something. You can still have massive sponsors and call one game 'The Citrus', 'The Peach', 'The Fiesta', 'The Orange', 'The Sugar', 'Rose' etc etc.
Ton of money to be made doing this - and all of of the games mean something - a playoff feel - one and done and you're gone.

I see your point, but I disagree, as a fan of the game. Some of these games are garbage-- Akron vs. Northwest Caltech in the Larry's Used Cars Bowl-- but I love Bowl games on in the background during the holiday season. The more the merrier. Keep your tournament idea and have these other crap bowls make up the football equivalent of the NIT or something.

There was nothing like having off during Christmas Break as a kid and on Dec 28th or so on a Tuesday night watching 'The Holiday Bowl' at 11:30pm where it's like a 55-52 shootout between BYU and Penn State - I agree - the bowls add to the festive season - but I can see nowadays these kids sitting out if they view it as meaningless and they have a future in the NFL at stake- kind of like the air being deflated from a balloon - when your team narrowly misses a 4 game playoff. I don't blame the likes of Fournette sitting out last year - now if he was involved in a playoff for a chance to win a Championship? That's a different story.....get in the game.

Who knows how the playoff committee thinks(it's a mystery), but if Wisconsin and Oklahoma both win out it looks like it will be:
Oklahoma Wisconsin SEC team ACC team
I like that.

Agreed, don't risk your future for the Hairbrush Bowl so your team can improve to 8-5. There are plenty of dudes on the team who will never play a down of pro football, so they won't have problems fielding a team regardless.

The question is who sneaks in if Wisconsin goes into the Big 10 Championship game undefeated and then loses? That's when it gets to be a mess. I'm sure the results of the Iron Bowl, ACC Championship, and SEC Championship would sort some of it out. It also means Ohio State wins the Big Ten so does that put them back in the picture? I would like to think that Notre Dame is toast after their blowout loss to Miami but they still have a shot.

Another thing to consider is if Alabama should lose to Auburn in the Iron Bowl would they take a one loss Alabama and possibly a 2 loss SEC champion over a one loss Wisconsin or a two loss Ohio State?

Another thing to consider is if Alabama should lose to Auburn in the Iron Bowl would they take a one loss Alabama and possibly a 2 loss SEC champion over a one loss Wisconsin or a two loss Ohio State? Yes, and they'd have a solid argument for doing so. In that scenario Alabama's only loss would be to a team that won the SEC championship; and Auburn beat Bama straight up to end the regular season and won their conf. championship, so you'd have to put them in as well. Meanwhile Wisconsin has played nobody and Ohio State has two losses (one manhandling at home and one absolute blowout on the road) on their resume. Auburn would have lost two road games (one to the defending champs) by a combined 12 points. The only argument Ohio State would have over Alabama in this scenario is that Alabama lost their last game and finishing strong should matter. (And I think it should matter, I just don't think that's a strong enough resume when you look at the body of work.) At that point the best the Big 10 could hope for is a little *ahem* corruption *ahem* emphasis on branding *ahem* attempt to attract a larger TV audience, or whatever it takes that surely the NCAA has never sunk to in the past.
