I think the make-up of boxing is a bit different in Britain. Up till the millennium, we'd take any British World Champion we could get, black, white, purple, we weren't fussy. So we certainly wouldn't have given any nicknames like "the great white hope". If anything, it would be more likely to be "the great British hope". Now we've got World Champs coming out our ears, and a lot of them haven't been getting much publicity. Guys like: Carl Frampton, Liam Smith, Lee Haskins, Jamie McDonnell, Darren Barker, Ryan Burnett, Stuart Hall, Clinton Woods, Terry Flanagan. Scott Quigg That's 10 World Champions just off the top of my head in recent years, all British, all white, all unknown to the wider public. I bet even some boxing fans wont know who some of those guys are! loved this guy: Here he is training the next big thing in British Boxing

Yeah, Oliver McCall beat Lennox Lewis, then Don King kinda shut Lennox Lewis out, but the good thing to come out of that was it gave Frank Bruno an opportunity to finally win the world title off McCall. At the time, that was really the holy grail for Bruno. Then Bruno on his first defence faced Mike Tyson of all people in a rematch, which I think was a bit of a cashout. He got beaten senseless in 3 rounds. The one good thing about Don King, is despite being a scammer as well as many other things, is he did put on some good cards. Ricky Hatton is doing well now I think, he's working with boxers and is a promoter.

Yeah, the 90s was a really bizarre time for boxing, I suppose in a sense you can't really count that as a legit win for Lewis. I think I heard somewhere (not sure if true) that they literally had to pull McCall out of rehab a couple of days before the fight, or some kind of voluntary asylum or something, or the fight would have been cancelled and millions would have been lost. Another black mark for boxing.

Probably soccer. Whoever says golf, you have to be insanely good to get a tour card.

He fought Henry Akinwande and Henry didn't fight. All he did was clamp down on Lewis' arms preventing him from punching. Akinwande was warned and warned and warned and then DQ'd and his purse was held from him. You didn't fight, you get zero dollars.

Soccer or cricket or darts or snooker (whatever the hell that is). You know. Brit sports.
Soccer is just running back and forth and occasionally missing a GIGANTIC goal or falling down when some other guy comes within 3 feet of you. No playoffs. Countless "Cups" so that everyone gets a trophy. The hardest thing about it seems to be feigning interest while running back and forth over and over. That's why the fans are always drunk while watching, right?

Lewis can rough you up pretty bad in close so I can understand why he did it. Lewis himself wasn't averse to a lot of clinching at times though, the Klitschkos were really bad for clinching, I'd like to see a bit more consistency from refs and the rules are fairly ambiguous when it comes to this, it is fair to say I think that the guys who don't clinch a lot like Pacquiao and Tyson tend to be the guys that the fans prefer watching. Well no reason why they would hold because they are great inside fighters.

Bonecrusher towered over him and just clinched every round to a chorus of boos - that being said - I think he's one of the few that went the distance with Tyson - all due to his clinching.

Curling.
Train him to be a sweeper. That way you get clean floors in the process, too.

Yeah, Frank Bruno tried to do it as well in the 1st fight, as did most his opponents to varying degrees, I think Mills Lane was in charge that fight though, and he was warning Frank pretty early, the good thing about Mills Lane is he did tend to clamp down on excessive holding. Some people say clinching is part of the art of boxing, but it can really stifle an exciting fighter, and if the fans don't want to see it maybe it is time to really clamp down on it, change the rules if necessary, especially as boxing has got competition now from MMA.
