Jon Finch is Blaney the barman, protagonist of Frenzy (Hitchcock) 1972. Jon Finch crossed my mind, but Blaney gets fired about two minutes into his first scene, before the Globe pub has even opened its doors for the day. But there's no reason we can't also include Anna Massey as his coworker/girlfriend Babs. She kept her job at least halfway through the film. Massey was the daughter of Raymond Massey and Adrianne Allen (who was active in British films and TV from 1930-'56). Anna was also sister to Daniel Massey and was married to Jeremy Brett from 1958-'62. Also pulling pints in Frenzy was Bernard Cribbins as Forsythe (Blaney's and Babs's boss), but I doubt he was anyone's favorite. As Dick Blaney said, he was "A right bastard."Here he is giving Babs and Blaney a hard time. Happily, Cribbins is still with us and working, and will turn 91 next month.

After posting Anna Massey, I got to thinking about the dearth of female bartenders in films. Only one I can think of is Ruth Springford as Mama Malone in my favorite western whodunit, 5 Card Stud. There was also Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan on ST:TNG... ...but as a boss of mine at Lorimar used to say, "It's only television."

'Eddie' (Frank Stallone) in Barfly. He's kind of a jackass which makes it fun to watch 'Henry' (Mickey Rourke) goad him into a fight.
The 'short bartender' (Cheech Marin) in Desperado. Tito Larriva (Tavo) and Cheech.

"Publican:" that's the word that slipped my mind when posting about Frenzy. Hubby and I were chatting just last night about differences in British and American terminology. If I understand correctly, Blaney was a "barman," Babs a "barmaid" and Forsythe a "publican." 'Course, here in the States, we don't use the latter, and a "barmaid" is more likely to be called a "cocktail waitress:" only serving drinks rather than pouring or mixing them. Now that I think of it, in fact, Cary Grant makes an observation to Robert Mitchum in The Grass Is Greener about those very words; something about how it's "pour" in one country and "mix" in the other, although I can't recall at the moment which was which. Are "barmaid" and "barman" even still in use these days? Whatever the case, here's another publican: Albert Sharpe as feisty "Jamey" Ashmond in Royal Wedding:

And Albert Sharpe also provides drinks and meals in his New York Irish pub to painter Joseph Cotten for doing a mural of Michael Collins (?) over the bar in PORTRAIT OF JENNIE.

He might not be from a 'classic' film, but my favourite bartender would probably have to be Bob Saginowski (played by Tom Hardy in The Drop), rescuer and defender of abused/abandoned puppies, who puts down any scumbag that dares threaten them.

My first thought was..........Lloyd! I *just* realized on my latest rewatch of Blade Runner that he was Tyrell. But yeah, same here.

The Late Show: Bill Macy as Charlie Hatter (with Art Carney, below): Couldn't find any images of Macy actually tending bar, which if memory serves occurs in only one scene*, and it has little to do with the plot, as it's merely his "day job," paying the rent to compensate for his less-than-successful efforts as talent agent and man-on-the-make, always out for a fast buck. But Macy, Carney, Lily Tomlin, Eugene Roche and everyone in the film is in top form, and this early writing/directing entry from Robert Benton is a special favorite of mine. *That one scene provides a great moment for Tomlin, who breezes in and announces, "I've got to have a Coke." She breathlessly rattles on in her typically wired fashion as Macy pours the contents of a can into a glass, which she then chug-a-lugs before slamming the glass down and complaining, "This is Pepsi!"

And Lily tells Macy about ice in her Cola: "And pleazzzee use the scoop!"
(after which he purposefully dips his hand in the glass)

And who could forget this fine fellow, whether he's at Martini's in Bedford Falls or his own Nick's in Pottersville?

Sheldon Leonard beat the band as Nick, whether at Martini's or his own place. "...out the door or out the window,--out you two pixies go!".

I liked Rob Moran in Dumb And Dumber. Lloyd asks him if Mary comes in the bar and the barman replies that she comes in all the time. Lloyd grabs him by the collars and the barman says she comes in for dinner.
